Spartans Pull Away for Win over William & Mary
NORFOLK, Va. - Alex Mauricio allowed just one hit in four innings of relief pitching and the Norfolk State offense came to life in the middle innings to lift the Spartans to a 6-3 win over William & Mary on Tuesday night at Marty L. Miller Field.
The victory was the Spartans' fourth in a row, 11th in their last 15 games and lifted NSU's record over .500 (17-16) for the first time this season.
NSU starter Cooper Jones and relievers Mauricio and Michael Parmentier combined to limit William & Mary (17-19) to just three hits. The Spartans, meanwhile, didn't manage a hit of their own until the fifth inning, but pieced together three two-run frames to overcome the Tribe.
Mauricio allowed just one hit, one walk and one run while striking out four in four innings to improve to 2-1 on the season. Parmentier struck out two batters in a scoreless ninth inning to record his third save of the year and second in as many games. Jones took a no decision, allowing just two hits and two runs in four innings to get the Spartans started.
Denathan Dukes went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Roger Hall was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Spartans, who have won two of their last three with the Tribe and split the season series.
Cullen Large batted 2-for-3 for W&M. Kinston Carson (1-2) took the loss despite not allowing a hit in 4.2 innings pitched. He allowed four runs (three earned) and walked three.
The Spartans host Coppin State for a three-game series this Saturday and Sunday at Marty L. Miller Field.

Hornets Fall To Rutgers
PISCATAWAY, N.J. --- Delaware State tied its season-high in hits and played an error-free game, but it was enough as the visiting Hornets fell to Big 10 Rutgers 12-8 at Bainton Field.
The Scarlet Knight scored five runs in the sixth inning to snap a 6-6 tie, and held on for its 17th win of the season (17-19). The Hornets fell to 9-27.
Tom Marcinzyk and Kyle Walker drove in three runs each to lead Rutgers’ 12-hit attack.
Austin Bentley was three-for-five with three runs batted in, while Darnel Maisonet had four hits and a RBI in five at-bats for the Hornets. DSU’s 16 hits tied its high for the season. Delaware State also had 16 base knocks in a 9-5 win at Norfolk State on Mar. 19.
Kwestin Smith was three-for-five at the plate, while Todd Henry had two hits and two RBI in six at bats for DSU.
Rutgers reliever Reed Shuttle (1-2) was the winning pitcher, while Terry Godfrey (0-1), the third of eight DSU hurlers, was tagged with the loss.
The Hornets return to MEAC action with a three-game series at UMES this weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. and a single game on Sunday at noon.
Delaware State is second in the MEAC North standings with a 9-5 record, one game behind first plate Norfolk State.

Wildcats Tripped Up At South Florida
TAMPA, Fla. – Demetrius Sims tallied his first career collegiate home run Tuesday evening, bit it was visiting Bethune-Cookman falling to USF, 6-2 at USF Baseball Stadium.
After being held scoreless through the opening two frames, Bethune-Cookman (16-22) redshirt sophomore Demetrius Sims registered his first collegiate home run with a leadoff shot to left field.
B-CU starting pitcher German Hernandez accepted the loss to even his record at 3-3 on the campaign. Hernandez pitched six frames, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits, three walks and five strikeouts.
The Wildcats offense was paced by leadoff man and senior Rakeem Quinn, as the left fielder went 2-for-4 at the plate. Sims finished the night 1-for-3 with a RBI and run scored, all via the solo shot in the third.
Bethune-Cookman will play its final home series of the season this weekend, welcoming Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opponent North Carolina Central to Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The series begins with a doubleheader Saturday, April 23, at 1 p.m.

North Carolina Central Rallies to Beat Longwood
DURHAM, N.C. -- North Carolina Central University rallied in the middle innings to take the lead over Longwood University and took a big 5-3 win over the Lancers at the Durham Athletic Park on Tuesday, April 19.
Conrad Kovalcik and Christian Triplett hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the second to give NCCU (27-16) a 3-1 lead over Longwood (21-19) for the first time in the day, when Triplett hit a solo shot to follow a two-run blast from Kovalcik.
The Lancers worked back to level at 3-3 in the top of the fifth on RBI singles from Carlos Garrido and C.J. Roth, but consecutive RBI singles from Zachary Marszal and Thomas Prospero gave the Eagles the lead for good.
Jamar Hinton was the pitcher of record when the Eagles took the lead, and he got his second win of the year after facing the minimum over two complete innings in relief. James Dey was called in for the final two frames of work, and he lobbed four strikeouts without allowing a runner to get his first collegiate save.
NCCU next travels south to visit Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Southern Division foe Bethune-Cookman for a three-game series from April 23-24.
