Bethune-Cookman Takes Down Florida A&M

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – Jameel Edney and Danny Rodriguez combined for six hits and six RBIs on Sunday afternoon, helping Bethune-Cookman to a 7-5 win in the rubber game of a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) baseball series against Florida A&M at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.

For Bethune-Cookman, the win gave B-CU a split of the two series on the year against FAMU, with the home teams holding firm, respectively.

Senior starting pitcher Juan Pizarro went 3.1 innings on the hill for the Wildcats, but failed to factor into the decision after allowing four runs in the third and fourth inning, respectfully. Pizarro allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits, adding four walks and two strikeouts in his first weekend start.

Meanwhile, it was junior left-hander Donté Lindsay collecting the win to even his record for the year at 3-3. The Cleveland native tossed four innings, allowing an unearned run and scattering four hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

The save went to Joseph Calamita, picking up his second save in as many days, earning the first in the series opener.

The loss went to FAMU reliever Chase Jarrell, dropping his record to 4-2 on the campaign. He went 3.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits, two walks and two strikeouts. In the start, Ryan Anderson worked just two innings, being tagged for four runs, one five hits, two walks and a pair of strikeouts.

Hornets Walk Off With Series Sweep Of Eagles

DOVER, Del. --- Darnel Maisonet’s infield single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning drove in the winning run in Delaware State’s 10-9 victory over Coppin State in a MEAC contest at Soldier Field.

The Hornets swept the three-game series to improve to 9-26 overall and 9-5 in the MEAC. The Eagles fell to 9-26 and 6-9.

The score was 9-9 when DSU batted in the ninth. Pinch hitter Niko Cribb singled off Coppin State reliever Jahmon Taylor to lead off the inning. Taylor was replaced on the mound by Delvin McFadden. Pinch runner Rich Rountree moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sam Barber. Rountree then took third on a wild pitch by McFadden. After Devin Beverly popped up to short for the second out of the inning, Todd Henry was intentionally walked to give the Hornets runners at third and first. Lefty Andrew O’Dwyer was brought in to pitch for Coppin State.  O’Dwyer walked the first batter he faced, Kwestin Smith, to load the bases. Maisonet followed with a line drive that struck the knee of O’Dwyer before rolling to the right side of the infield, allowing Rountree to cross the plate with the winning run.

The Eagles outhit the Hornets 12-6. Maisonet and Austin Bentley had two hits each for DSU while Colin Dower was three-for-four with three RBI for Coppin State.

Travis Dill (1-1), DSU’s fourth pitcher of the game, threw two scoreless innings to earn the win. Taylor (0-1) suffered the loss for Coppin State.

The Hornets return to action on Tuesday at Rutgers.  Game time is 3 p.m. in New Brunswick, N.J.

DSU returns to MEAC play with a three-game series at UMES next weekend.

NCCU Muscles Past North Carolina A&T State for Weekend Sweep

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central hit a pair of big home runs and used other big hits to get the weekend series sweep over North Carolina A&T State, 8-4 on Sunday, April 17 at the Durham Athletic Park.

N.C. A&T State (9-30, 3-12 MEAC) took the lead with a pair of runs in the first couple innings, but NCCU (20-19, 8-7 MEAC) was able to work its way back even in the bottom of the third.

Ellington Hopkins (Lansing, N.Y.) put the Eagles on the board with a solo shot to right field, and Carlos Ortiz leveled the game at 2-2 with an RBI single to drive in Trevor Theissen.

In the bottom of the fourth NCCU picked up consecutive two-out walks, and a dropped pop up in the infield allowed Christian Triplett to hustle all the way in from second base to move the Eagles in front, 3-2.

A leadoff solo home run from Kyle Clary knotted the game once again in the top of the fifth, but NCCU took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth.

Theissen stepped up and delivered an RBI triple – his first three-bagger at NCCU – and he was brought in on a single from James Dey to give the Eagles a 5-3 advantage.

The Eagles will next be in action at home against Longwood University on Tuesday, April 19 at the Durham Athletic Park before heading to Daytona Beach, Florida to visit Bethune-Cookman University.
