Baseball Recap: April 13

Wildcats Fall in Walk-Off Fashion At Florida International

MIAMI – Zach Files hit a walk-off, two-run home run Wednesday afternoon to lift homestanding FIU past Bethune-Cookman, 4-3 at FIU Baseball Stadium.

Two weeks after a decisive 21-8 decision in favor of FIU at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, Wednesday’s game would be the exact opposite, providing late drama that appeared in both games of the mid-week series between the two sides a season ago.

Bethune-Cookman (14-20) sent ace closer senior right-hander Clint Clymer to the hill in the bottom of the ninth, holding a 3-2 advantage.

After FIU left fielder Nick Day singled to open the bottom of the ninth, first baseman Zach Files drove a 1-1 pitch deep to right field for his third home run of the campaign. Thus, giving FIU (16-19) a walk-off 4-3 victory in the process.

The win was picked up by FIU’s Williams Durruthy, improving his record to 1-3 on the year. Meanwhile, Clymer took the loss to fall to 1-3 himself.

B-CU starter Donté Lindsay went just two innings, scattering five hits and allowing zero (0) runs and walking one with two strikeouts.

The B-CU offense was paced by Rakeem Quinn with a 3-for-4 performance, adding a run scored. Danny Rodriguez added three hits in five appearances, scoring once and driving in a run.

Bethune-Cookman returns to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play this weekend, welcoming Florida A&M for a three-game series at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex in Ormond Beach, Florida. The series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 16, at 1 p.m.

Duke Takes Crosstown Tilt with NCCU Baseball

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University out-hit Duke University eight to six, but the Blue Devils used timely hitting to win the crosstown battle over the Eagles, 3-0 at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Wednesday, April 13.

Duke (19-15) picked up a pair of runs in the first two frames after Chris Proctor generated an RBI single in the second to give the hosts a 2-0 lead. Proctor would go on to get a second RBI hit, and he was responsible for driving in two of the three runs scored for the Blue Devils.

Christian Gonnelli turned in a five strikeout performance for NCCU (17-19) over six complete innings and scattered five hits with two earned runs, but the Eagles just couldn’t find the key to push a run across.

A pair of Eagle hitters picked up two hits as both James Dey and Thomas Prospero (Batavia, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 for the evening.  Dey also came in from the bullpen and pitched two-thirds of an inning with both outs recorded by a swinging strikeout.

The Eagles will meet Duke again at the Durham Athletic Park on April 27 at 6:00 p.m., but first NCCU hosts a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference three-game series with rival North Carolina A&T State University starting with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 16.
