Bentley's Walk-Off Gives DSU 6-5 Win over NSU
DOVER, Del. - Austin Bentley hit a run-scoring single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give host Delaware State a 6-5 win over Norfolk State in the teams' MEAC series finale on Monday afternoon at Soldier Field.
Bentley's hit off Spartan reliever Michael Parmentier scored pinch runner Jaylen Zielecki from third base and helped the Hornets (6-25, 6-5 MEAC North) avoid a three-game sweep.
The Spartans (13-15, 7-4) jumped out to a 3-0 lead and led 5-4 entering the seventh, but could not hold on.
Darnell Maisonet, who began the game as DSU's designated hitter, moved to the mound in the sixth and earned the win by pitching 3.2 scoreless innings of relief. He allowed one hit and struck out four.
Cooper Jones (2-2), the second of NSU's three pitchers, took the loss as the winning run was charged to his line. He allowed three hits in 1.1 innings of work, striking out two.
Tony Leite and Angel Rosario had two hits each for NSU and Lee had two RBI. Bentley went 4-for-5 and Maisonet 2-for-5 for DSU.
The Spartans are scheduled to play a 6:30 p.m. game Tuesday at VCU.

Hawks Earn Day Two Split, Eagles Take Series
HANOVER, Md. — In the second day of a four game series with Coppin State, the Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team rebounded from getting swept on Sunday to win the opener Monday, 7-3. However, Coppin State overwhelmed the Hawks in the second game by a 12-6 score, forcing a split and taking the series three games to one.
Maryland Eastern Shore’s record moved to 9-22 and 4-8 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Coppin improves to 8-22 and 6-6 in the MEAC. Today’s games mark the halfway point of the conference season, and UMES currently sits in fourth in the Northern Division.
Sophomore Toby Hoskins earned his first win of the season, going 6 1/3 innings of two run ball. Freshman Tom Summers and senior Devin Repine contributed 2 2/3 innings in relief, conceding just one unearned run. In the nightcap, senior Will Turley was saddled with the loss.
On offense, both senior Connor Breslin and Summers collected three hits each, with four RBI’s between them. Freshman Zach Mills did one better in the hit column with a 4-for-8 effort along with three runs scored and senior Mike Escanilla tallied a pair of hits and three RBIs over the two games.
The Hawks will move on to hosting Georgetown on Wednesday before traveling for an even more crucial MEAC matchup with Norfolk State in Virginia next weekend to kick off the second half of conference play.
