Koerner Reaches Century Mark as Eagles Split Twinbill with UNC Asheville
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – North Carolina Central University head baseball coach Jim Koerner notched his 100th career coaching victory with the maroon and gray as the Eagles split a doubleheader with UNC Asheville on Saturday, April 9 at Greenwood Baseball Stadium.
Asheville (9-23) took the first game by a score of 6-5 in extra innings, and NCCU (16-18) won the second 5-2.
Koerner began his tenure at NCCU in the 2012 season, and saw his first victory on Feb. 25 of that season as the Eagles defeated New Jersey Institute of Technology 8-5 in Durham.
NCCU lit up the scoreboard first for the afternoon after Christian Triplett boosted his fifth home run of the year to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the third inning. NCCU added another run in the top of the fourth and it was able to carry a 2-0 advantage to the sixth inning of seven.
It only took one extra frame for the game to be decided as Lucas Owens supplied a pinch-hit walkoff RBI in the bottom of the eighth to give the home team a win in the opener.

Wildcats Sweep Doubleheader From Savannah State
ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman scored six late runs in the first game to cap a come-from-behind win, and sophomore pitcher Tyler Norris pitched a complete-game shutout in the nightcap to help the Wildcats sweep a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon from Savannah State at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
With the doubleheader sweep, the Wildcats earned their third MEAC series win on the spin.
In the opener, Bethune-Cookman scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to complete a come-from-behind win over visiting Savannah State, 12-7 in the opening game of a three-game series at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex. Due to a scheduling conflict with the Daytona Tortuga at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, the Wildcats were forced to play in Ormond Beach, Florida
In the opener, the win was collected by relief pitcher Zach Olszewski, evening his record at 1-1 on the year. He went two innings on the mound, allowing an unearned run on no hits and five strikeouts. Clint Clymer tossed the ninth, allowing a hit and fanning a pair.
The loss went to SSU reliever Gregory Smith II, dropping his record to 2-5 on the campaign. He worked just an inning and a third, giving up three runs on five hits.
Failing to factor into the decision for the Maroon and Gold, German Hernandez went 4.1 innings in a starting role, giving up six runs (five earned) on five hits, three walks and three strikeouts.
In the second game, sophomore right-hander Tyler Norris tallied his second complete-game effort of the year for Bethune-Cookman, as he kept visiting Savannah State scoreless in leading his team to a 3-0 win in the nightcap of a MEAC doubleheader at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
Norris, a native of Coral Springs, Florida, picked up his second complete-game MEAC effort of the campaign – the first since defeating North Carolina Central in Durham, North Carolina on March 19.
The two teams meet again Sunday for the final game of the series back at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
