Hornets Fall To Villanova In Pitcher’s Duel

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. --- Delaware State allowed just five hits and one earned run, but Villanova’s pitchers were just a little better in the Wildcats’ 2-1 victory over the Hornets today.

Villanova starter Jonathan Rosero (2-0) tossed six shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out three to earn the win.

Three Wildcat relievers held the Hornets to two hits and one run.

Delaware State starter Jaylen Zielecki (0-1) was the tough-luck loser after allowing an unearned run without a hit in the bottom of the first inning. That was the only run Zielecki gave up in four innings. The only hit Villanova had off the Hornet starter was a third inning single.

Villanova improved to 3-9 on the season, while DSU is winless in 12 games.

The Hornets will return to action on Friday (Mar. 11) for their 2016 home opener against Marist. Game time is 2 p.m. at Soldier Field. The teams will also play single games on Saturday (1 p.m.) and Sunday (12 p.m.).

Wildcats Fall In Extra Innings To Jacksonville

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman suffered a tough 4-3 setback to Jacksonville on Tuesday evening, falling to the Dolphins in extra innings in non-conference baseball action inside Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach, Florida.

For Bethune-Cookman (4-7), a throwing error charged to the infield proved to be costly Tuesday evening as it allowed the eventual winning run to step onto second base with one out in the top-half of the 10th inning. After B-CU reliever Clint Clymer got Jacksonville’s Angel Camacho to strikeout, the Dolphins’ second baseman Dakota Julylia singled to right center, pushing across the winning run in the form of shortstop JJ Gould.

The win would be collected by Mike Cassala (1-1), who started the game behind the dish going 1-for-3 with the bat, adding a RBI. Cassala tossed 1.1 innings and fanned two.

The loss was tagged to Bethune-Cookman’s Clymer (0-1) as he went 1.2 innings on the hill, allowing a single, unearned run on two hits and striking out a season-high four.

Trent Nash led the Cats at the plate with a 2-for-4 night, scoring once and adding a RBI.

Bethune-Cookman returns to the diamond Wednesday, March 9, playing host to UCF at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.

NCCU’s Rally Falls Short in 9-6 Loss at Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. – North Carolina Central University amassed 14 hits and out-scored Charleston Southern University 6-1 in the final six innings, but the Buccaneers scored the game’s first eight runs then held on for a 9-6 victory over the Eagles on Tuesday night.

Charleston Southern (8-5) jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the first inning and four more in the third for an 8-0 cushion.

NCCU (7-6) answered the challenge with two runs in the fourth, another in the fifth and three runs in the ninth, but CSU turned a key double-play in the final frame to end the Eagles’ threat.

Junior infielder Ellington Hopkins went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI double and a walk with the bases loaded, while also scoring a run to account for half of NCCU’s run production.  Senior infielder Trevor Theissen had a team-high three hits with an RBI, while junior outfielder Zachary Marszal and senior designated hitter James Dey added two hits apiece for the Eagles.
