Ricky Page’s Strong Outing Lifts FAMU to 2-1 Win Over Western Michigan

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida A&M (5-5) held Western Michigan (0-7) scoreless over the final six innings en route to a 2-1 win at Moore-Kittles Field on Friday.

The Rattlers scored two run in the second inning and it proved to be all they would need for the victory. FAMU starter Ricky Page (1-0) earned the win with a strong outing as he tied a career long with seven innings pitched. Page allowed just one run as the Broncos scattered four hits with a season-high four strikeouts. The pitching staff only allowed two hits over the final seven innings of play.

Hunter Fillingim earned the save as he came in to record the final two outs of the ninth inning, including a strikeout for the final out to end the game.

Broncos starter Keegan Akin (0-2) suffered the loss after giving up two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Akin had only walked two batters on the year coming in to today’s game.

Florida A&M and Western Michigan continue their three-game series on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Seven-Run First innings Leads Eastern Kentucky Past Maryland Eastern Shore

RICHMOND, Ky. — Perhaps the most famous brand of baseball bats is the Louisville Slugger, proudly headquartered and manufactured in Louisville, Kentucky.

An hour and a half away, Eastern Kentucky proved they had their own brand of heavy hitters. These “Richmond Sluggers”—aka the Eastern Kentucky Colonels—proved their worth with a seven run first inning the overwhelmed the visiting Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks on the way to a 17-1 win Friday.

The Hawks (3-5) dropped their third straight contest.

Senior Mike Escanilla delivered the team’s only run with an RBI double in the fourth that scored freshman Joseph NiCastro (New Market, Maryland). Escanilla, NiCastro and Valdez each collected two hits each for Maryland Eastern Shore.

Maryland Eastern Shore will face Eastern Kentucky twice on Saturday, beginning their doubleheader at noon at Turkey Hughes Field on EKU’s campus.

Wildcats Fall Late To Florida Gulf Coast

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast scored three runs in the ninth inning to secure a 9-6 series-opening victory over homestanding Bethune-Cookman on Friday night in non-conference baseball action inside Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

With the game tied at 6-all and the bases loaded for Florida Gulf Coast (3-6), leadoff hitter and second baseman Jake Noll doubled to left and plated a pair of runs in the form of Zach Spivey and Matt Reardon to give the Eagles an 8-6 advantage. Relief pitcher Zach Olszewski would toe the rubber for Bethune-Cookman to collect the final two outs, but not before third baseman Tyler Selesky plated Gage Morey on a sacrifice fly to left, leading to the final 9-6 score.

The win went to FGCU reliever Knoblauch (1-0) as he worked 2.2 innings and gave up just two hits while fanning three and walking two. In reverse, Ivan Coutinho (0-1) suffered the loss for the Cats as he went 0.2 inning, allowing two runs and walking three.

The B-CU offense was sparked by Rakeem Quinn with a 3-for-4 night, adding a RBI. Demetrius Sims upped his hitting streak to three games with a 3-for-6 performance, while Michael Cruz added to his eight-game hitting streak with a 2-for-2 night with two RBI. Danny Rodriguez added a pair of hits, as well as Trent Nash with two hits, a RBI and a run scored.

The two teams meet for game two of the three-game series back at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Saturday at 1 p.m.
