Hawks’ Ninth Inning Comeback Falls Just Short
RICHMOND, Va. – A furious ninth inning rally was not enough for the Hawks as the baseball team dropped the opening game of this weekend’s tournament to Saint Peter’s by a final of 10-8.
On offense, seven of the nine Hawks collected base hits, with Mike Escanilla, Jessey Valdez, Connor Breslin and sophomore Jamison Trower picking up two hits each. Valdez collected three RBIs to push his season total to seven and his average to .467 over the first four games. In addition, five Hawks drew walks in the game, driving the team’s on-base percentage this season to .342.
UMES will face off with Saint Peter’s tomorrow morning at 10:00a.m., with sophomore Toby Hoskins getting the call for the Hawks. The team will then play Richmond at 2:00p.m., with freshman Zach Mills slated to be on the hill.

Norfolk State-NJIT Series Pushed Back One Day
NORFOLK, Va. – Due to wet field conditions at Marty L. Miller Field, this weekend’s baseball series against NJIT has been pushed back one day.
The Spartans and Highlanders will play a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday and another starting at 11 a.m. Monday. There will be no games played Saturday.

Kovalcik’s HR Blasts Spark NCCU in Win over Niagara
DURHAM, N.C. - North Carolina Central University junior catcher Conrad Kovalcik belted two home runs, a three-run blast in the first inning and a solo shot in the fifth, to spark the host Eagles to a 7-3 victory over Niagara University on Friday at Durham Athletic Park.
Junior center fielder Carlos Ortiz tallied two hits with an RBI double, a walk and a run scored to aid NCCU’s offense, while junior left fielder Jacobi Harris also contributed a pair of hits.
NCCU starting pitcher Cameron Scalzo tossed 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on three hits with four strikeouts to earn the victory. Jamar Hinton pitched the final 3.2 frames without allowing a run to pick up the save.
Niagara second baseman Michael Fuhrman topped the visitors with two hits, including a double, and two runs scored.
NCCU (1-3) and Niagara (1-4) continue the four-game weekend series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 4:00 p.m.
