Old Dominion Starts Fast, Tops Norfolk State
NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion jumped out to a quick lead over Norfolk State and held off the Spartans to claim a 5-3 win over the Spartans on Tuesday night at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
Roger Hall was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for NSU (0-4), and Syeed Mahdi went 2-for-5.
Joey Benitez (1-0) got the win for ODU, pitching four innings and allowing two runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Michael Parmentier (0-2) took the loss for the Spartans, surrendering five runs, four earned, in 3.1 innings of work. He struck out four and walked four.
The Spartans are slated to host a four-game series with NJIT this Saturday and Sunday at Marty L. Miller Field.

Weather Halts Florida A&M’s Game at Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Heavy rain and lighting in the top of the fifth inning halted Tuesday night’s Florida A&M (2-1) baseball game at Jacksonville (0-0) at John Sessions Stadium. The Rattlers had scored a single run in the top of the fifth inning and had runners on second and third with two outs when the game was called. Both teams had four hits in the game up to the time of the delay.
Florida A&M will head to Auburn on Wednesday to face the Tigers at Samford Stadium - Hitchcock Field at Plainsman Park. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Wildcats Stopped By Central Florida
ORLANDO, Fla. – UCF used two big innings Tuesday night, surging past Bethune-Cookman, 12-7 in non-conference baseball action inside the UCF Baseball Complex in Orlando, Florida.
With both teams entering working on series wins over the weekend, Bethune-Cookman (2-2) looked strong early-on against the homestanding Knights.
Danny Melgarejo took the loss, falling to 0-1 on the year in just an inning of work, allowing two runs on three hits and walking two. The win went to Andrew Deramo, lifting him to 1-0 for the year with 4.1 innings of work, allowing three earned runs on six hits, four strikeouts and a walk.
The B-CU offense was led by Demetrius Sims with a 3-for-5 night, scoring three runs and adding three putouts – two by amazing catches in the outfield roaming from his shortstop position. Akevious Williams, Rakeem Quinn, Jameel Edney and Clay Middleton each added two hits apiece.
Bethune-Cookman returns to action Friday, Feb. 26, traveling to Winter Haven, Florida to face UW-Milwaukee at 2 p.m.

Hornets Blanked At George Washington
ARLINGTON, Va. --- Delaware State’s early season offensive struggles continued today in an 8-0 loss to George Washington in the Colonials’ 2016 home opener at Tucker Field.
GW starter Shane Sweeney threw five-shutout innings, allowing just two singles while striking out nine, to earn the win. The Hornets were held to four singles in the contest. Three Colonial relievers combined to allow two singles and strike out six in four innings.
George Washington (2-2) opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning off DSU starter Cole Davis. The Colonials added four runs in the sixth inning and two in the seventh to close out the scoring.
Bobby Campbell led George Washington’s 12-hit attack with two hits, both doubles, and three runs batted in. Campbell doubled in a run in the first and doubled in two more in the sixth.
Cole Davis (0-1) allowed six hits and two runs, while striking out three and walking two, over 3.2 innings in his first collegiate start.
Darnell Maisonet, Jaylen Zielecki, Todd Henry and Adrian Hill each singled in the game for the Hornets. Zielecki has one hit in each of the Hornets’ five games this season.
The Hornets (0-5) return to action this Saturday (Feb. 27) with a doubleheader against Fairfield in Thomasville, N.C. Game one is scheduled to begin at noon. The teams will wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday at 12 p.m.
