Lehigh Overcomes NSU's Power Surge For Win

NORFOLK, Va. - Alex Mauricio hit two of Norfolk State's three home runs, including a grand slam, but Lehigh struck for two unearned runs in the top of the ninth to win 7-6 over the Spartans and complete a three-game sweep on Monday at Marty L. Miller Field.

Mauricio hit his first two career home runs and Tony Leite added hit his first career homer in the loss for the Spartans (0-3).

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the second, NSU drew three straight walks from Lehigh starter Matt Kozemchak to start the inning. Then on a 3-1 count, Mauricio sent a 3-1 fastball from Kozemchak over the 395-foot sign in left field for a grand slam and a 4-2 NSU lead. It was NSU's first grand slam since Ross Cardwell's against Coppin State on May 12, 2012.

The Mountain Hawks (3-0) tied the game with two runs in the fourth on RBI singles by Connor Donovan and Jeff Shanfeldt. But in the bottom of the fifth, Leite drilled a high fastball from Cole McManimon into the trees beyond the wall down the left-field line to give NSU a 5-4 lead. One batter later, Mauricio homered to almost the same spot as his grand slam in the second, tacking on a solo shot that made it 6-4.

Lehigh scratched across an unearned run in the seventh. James Bleming reached on an error and later scored on a Patrick Donnelly single to get Lehigh within 6-5. But Mauricio moved over to the mound from shortstop and held the Mountain Hawks at bay through the eighth.

But in the ninth, Mauricio left after walking Bleming, who then advanced to third on a pair of passed balls. Jonathan Mauricio relieved his younger brother on the mound and got Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year Mike Garzillo to hit into a drawn-in infield. But a throwing error allowed Bleming to score the tying run. Donnelly then doubled into the left-field corner to score Garzillo with the tying run.

Sam Ashey retired NSU in order in the ninth to seal the win. Ashey earned the win on the mound by retiring all 13 batters he faced in 4.1 innings of work, striking out six.

Jonathan Mauricio (0-1) took the loss, allowing one unearned run in his inning of relief work.

Devin Hemmerich took the no-decision for NSU, allowing just two earned runs (five total) in 6.1 innings pitched. He struck out eight and walked none.

Only two of the seven runs NSU pitchers allowed were earned due to four Spartan errors.

Monday marked NSU's first game with three home runs since March 10, 2010, at North Carolina Central.

The Spartans are slated to play a 3 p.m. game Tuesday at Old Dominion.
