NSU's Dukes, Outman Pick up All-State Honors

NORFOLK, Va. - Norfolk State baseball players Denathan Dukes and Matt Outman earned second-team all-state honors by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID), the organization announced Friday.

Dukes, an outfielder who just completed his sophomore season, was also a second-team All-MEAC selection in 2015. Serving primarily as the Spartans' lead-off batter in his first year as a starter, Dukes led the MEAC with a .357 batting average. He recorded eight doubles, two triples, 18 runs batted in and 11 stolen bases. Dukes scored 33 runs in 33 games played, leading the conference in runs per game (1.0).

Outman logged an 8-2 record and a 3.12 earned-run average as a junior en route to MEAC Pitcher of the Year and All-MEAC first-team honors. Outman led all MEAC pitchers with eight wins and 85 strikeouts in 75 innings pitched. He also earned second-team ABCA All-East Region honors earlier this summer. Dukes and Outman were integral parts of NSU's first-ever MEAC Northern Division regular-season title and a school Division I-era record 27 victories (27-16) in 2015.

Michael Morman of Richmond earned VaSID Player of the Year accolades. National champion Virginia picked up Pitcher of the Year (Josh Sborz), Rookie of the Year (Pavin Smith) and Coach of the Year (Brian O'Connor) honors.
