UMES' Escanilla earns Academic All-American Honors

GREENWOOD, Ind. -- Junior second baseman Mike Escanilla had his hard work from this season pay off by being named to a CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District team. He was named the second baseman for District 2, which covers Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. This honor was announced by CoSIDA today.

Two main criteria determine the honorees, as each person is recognized for their athletic successes and athletic prowess. Those attributes are then considered by a vote of sports information directors.

Escanilla has proven his might on the baseball diamond, leading the Hawks with a .352 batting average, 51 hits, 37 runs, four triples, a .490 slugging percentage and .457 on-base percentage and 17 steals. Academically, Escanilla has also done extraordinarily well, securing a 3.57 GPA as a Biology major, proving he can excel both on the field and in the classroom.

Michael Flax of La Salle, Matt McKinnon of Penn and Joe Ogren of Bucknell joined Escanilla as the infield honorees. The La Salle Explorers had three members on the team, most for any school. Besides Penn and Bucknell, representatives from Maryland, Eastern Kentucky, Kentucky and George Washington were also recognized.

District honorees can be selected as Academic All-Americans, which will be decided in the next couple of weeks.

UMES just wrapped up the 2015 regular season this past Wednesday against UMBC, and are currently preparing for the MEAC tournament, to be played at Perdue Stadium in Salisbury from April 13-16th.
