NSU's Hemmerich Named Collegiate Baseball Player of the Week

NORFOLK, Va. – Sophomore left hander Devin Hemmerich of the Norfolk State baseball team was honored by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper on Monday when he was named one of the national players of the week.

Hemmerich pitched NSU’s first no-hitter in 19 years, and the first in the Spartans’ Division I era, on Sunday during game 1 of a doubleheader against Coppin State at Marty L. Miller Field. In a 6-1 victory over the Eagles, he tied his career high with 10 strikeouts and allowed one earned run and one walk in the seven-inning victory.

It marked the fifth no-hitter in program history and the first since March 12, 1996 in a 39-0, six-inning win over St. Paul’s. CSU’s only run of the game came in the first on a walk, stolen base and groundout.

Hemmerich, a native of Norfolk, Va., was one of seven players to be recognized as a national player of the week by Collegiate Baseball as presented by Big League Chew bubble gum.

It also marks the second honor for Hemmerich issued to him by the organization. Last year the publication named him to the Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-America Team after going 5-3 with a 2.49 ERA in 61.1 innings pitched in 2014.

Current assistant coach Joey Seal was the last Spartan player to be recognized as a national player of the week on March 4, 2008 when he was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Co-Pitcher of the Week.
