MEAC ANNOUNCES 2015 BASEBALL ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS

NORFOLK, Va.– Savannah State first baseman Charles Sikes was selected as the 2015 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Player of the Year, the conference announced on Monday.  Adan Ordonez of North Carolina A&T State was named Rookie of the Year, while Norfolk State’s Matt Outman earned Pitcher of the Year honors. Norfolk State’s Claudell Clark received Coach of the Year accolades.

All awards are voted on by the conference’s head baseball coaches and sports information directors.

Sikes, a 2014 All-MEAC First Team honoree and the 2015 Preseason Player of the Year, led the conference in doubles (16). He also finished second in total bases (94), tied for second in home runs (7) and third in RBI (37), while his five sacrifice flies ranked 55th nationally. Sikes was a one-time MEAC Player of the Week honoree (March 2).

Ordonez started all 46 games and batted .337 in 172 attempts. He recorded 58 hits, including 10 doubles and one triple, with 13 RBI and 29 runs scored.  Defensively, Ordonez threw out 18-of-68 (26-percent) base stealers and recorded a .978 fielding percentage.

Outman appeared in 12 games and registered eight wins, including one shutout, in 68.1 innings pitched. He ranks first in the MEAC in wins (8) and strikeouts (78), second in strikeouts per nine innings (10.27), and third in ERA (2.77) and hits allowed per nine innings (7.11). Nationally, Outman ranks 18th in wins, 45th in strikeouts and 48th in strikeouts per nine innings.

Clark earned Coach of the Year honors after leading the Spartans to a 19-5 conference mark and a 26-14 overall record, along with clinching the number one seed from the northern division in the upcoming 2015 MEAC Baseball Championship.  The 26 wins set a new season-high in Norfolk State’s history at the Division I level.

Joining Sikes (SSU), Ordonez (NCAT) and Outman (NSU) on the first team are Austin Denney (SSU), Clint Clymer (B-CU), Mike Escanilla (UMES), Zachary Brigham (SSU), Cameron Onderko (DSU), Charles Dailey (DSU), Carlos Ortiz (NCCU), Brandon Wilkerson (NCAT) and Tim Ravare (NCAT).
