Hornets Upended 12-7 at Home by In-State Foe UD

Dover, Del. – Battling wet and chilly conditions, the Delaware State baseball team (6-20) were unable to hold on to an early game lead at home Wednesday against the Delaware Blue Hens (12-12), as the Hornets suffered a 12-7 defeat.

With this loss, the Hornets dropped their eighth in a row, while UD tallied its second straight win, after dropping its previous three.

At game’s end, the Blue Hens finished with 12 hits, led by Powell’s 3-for-4 effort, compared to DSU’s 11.  Onderko led the way for the Hornets with a 2-for-4 output at the plate, in addition to totaling two RBI.  The difference of the evening, however, turned out to be five Hornet errors, while eight DSU pitchers combined to give up seven earned runs and five walks.

Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will head to Baltimore, Md. this weekend for a critical three-game series against MEAC foe Coppin State.  Earlier this season, the Hornets took all three games at home against CSU.

Hawks Pitching Solid in Loss to Navy

PRINCESS ANNE, Md.  – Rainy weather forced a late start to Wednesday’s non-conference matchup between the Hawks and the U.S. Naval Academy Midshipmen. After an hour and a half delay, the teams battled in a pitcher’s duel before Navy earned the win in ten innings by a 3-2 score. UMES now stands at 11-19 on the year.

Both teams then supplied a slew of relief pitchers that turned the game into a stalemate. Colin Brady, Sam Sorenson and Jett Meenach each went multiple innings for the visitors, keeping the Hawks at bay. The Hawks countered with six pitchers who tossed one scoreless inning apiece. Sophomore Kameron Raison pitched the fourth while senior Michael Epps pitched the fifth. Three Cecil County products followed, beginning with junior J.P. Black, followed by freshman Chris Melrath and Toby Hoskins (North East, Md.). Junior Devin Repine staved off a rally in the ninth to keep the game deadlocked.

The Hawks will now head to Norfolk for a first place showdown with the Spartans this weekend. A doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00p.m. Saturday with a single game to follow Sunday at noon.

Eagles Come Up Big In 6-3 Win Over Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – North Carolina Central University used some timely hitting to put two runs on the board in three separate innings to take down Campbell University 6-3 on Wednesday, April 8. The win by the Eagles is their third in the last four meetings with the Camels, after opening the series with 14 consecutive losses.

Sophomore catcher James Dey put the first hit on the board for NCCU (16-17) with a single in the bottom of the second, and Cory Williamson followed suit with a single of his own.  Jacobi Harris earned a walk to load the bases, but a flyout allowed Campbell starter Matt Meyer to tightrope out of the jam.

Jonathon Figueroa was the pitcher of record for the first time this season, and he earned his first collegiate win to improve to 1-0 this season. Coley Thompkins was tabbed with the loss after giving up those two runs in the sixth, and his record drops to 3-2.

NCCU rolls to the weekend for a three-game series with Bethune-Cookman University at the Durham Athletic Park beginning with a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 11 at the Durham Athletic Park.  Admission is free.
