Montano records two hits in Coppin State’s loss
ARLINGTON, Va. – Coppin State freshman Lance Montano had two hits, including a RBI double during an 11-2 defeat to George Washington at Bancroft Park Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference baseball game.
For Montano, it was his third multi-hit performance of the season. He had two hits in a game earlier this season against Wofford and Jacksonville. He has at least one hit in four of Coppin State’s last five games. During Saturday’s loss to Delaware State, Montano recorded the Eagles first hit of the contest with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Also recording hits for Coppin State were Colin Dower, Jeffrey Fitch, Bobby Dragon and Darien Percell. Fitch’s hit was a one-out double in the first inning. Dower, who singled with one out, scored on a wild-pitch in the third inning that tied the game at 1-1. Dragon has a team-best 43 hits on the season.
Jesse Kraft was strong in delivering four strong one-run innings. Kraft allowed three hits. His effort helped Coppin State battle first-place George Washington tough for much of the game. The Colonials lead the Atlantic-10 Conference.
Coppin State (3-35-2 overall) finishes its 2015 season with a weekend series at Norfolk State. The Eagles and Spartans will play a doubleheader Saturday at 1:00 p.m. followed by a single game on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.

Wildcats drop midweek affair at Stetson
DeLAND, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman was unable to get the offense going Wednesday evening, as the Wildcats dropped a 17-0 midweek contest to Stetson in non-conference baseball action at Melching Field inside Conrad Park. In the loss, Bethune-Cookman dropped both games of the two-game series on the year against its Volusia County rival from nearby DeLand.
Runs came early and often for Stetson (24-22) in the annual east versus west matchup of Volusia County’s only Division baseball playing schools.
The win went to starter Kevin Fagan who earned his first decision of the year, tossing six innings and allowing just three hits, a walk and striking out a pair. The loss was earned by Michael Austin (3-2) as he worked just an inning and a third, giving up five runs (four earned) on three hits and two walks.
B-CU relief pitchers Alexis Herrera, Joseph Calamita and German Hernandez each worked an inning a piece to close out the game, with none of the trio allowing a run. Herrera fanned three in the sixth and Hernandez two in the eighth.
Five Wildcats collected hits in the game, including doubles from shortstop Demetrius Sims and Jordan Thomas. Sims legged out a double early in the game on what appeared to be a simple single to center.
Bethune-Cookman returns to action this weekend in a three-game MEAC series at Savannah State, beginning with a doubleheader Saturday, May 2, at 1 p.m.
