Playing at Fenway Park is a dream of a lifetime.
That dream will come true for Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) members Florida A&M University and North Carolina Central University as the baseball teams compete in the inaugural HBCU Legacy Weekend, sponsored by the Boston Red Sox, April 24-25.
The teams will play a doubleheader at Jim Rice Field, named in honor of the Red Sox’s Hall of Famer, on Friday, April 24 and a single game at Fenway Park on Saturday, April 25. The game at Fenway will be the first official conference-standing contest between HBCUs at a Major League Baseball stadium.
“This is a historic moment for Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, North Carolina Central University and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference,” said MEAC Commissioner Dennis E. Thomas. “To have two of our outstanding academic institutions, led by a true visionary President and Chancellor - Dr. Elmira Mangum, President of FAMU and Dr. Debra Saunders-White, Chancellor of NCCU speaks volumes. Also, I would like to applaud President/CEO of the Boston Red Sox, Larry Lucchino, Mayor Marty Walsh, Red Sox Special Adviser Frank Jordan and Chairman of the Board of the Boston Red Sox, Tom Werner, for their leadership in bringing this event to a world class city like Boston. This event will help expose the talented students to all that Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University and North Carolina Central have to offer for their future. This is another opportunity to brand and market our institutions and the MEAC.”
The three games are among several activities planned for a weekend that is designed to celebrate black colleges and universities and their history while exposing students in Boston’s public schools to them. Activities during the weekend include a fundraising reception to benefit Florida A&M and North Carolina Central with business and community leaders attending on April 23. There will be a discussion involving two players from each team on the topic, ‘What Freedom Means to Me,’ on April 24 following the doubleheader. On April 25, an open house is scheduled at Fenway Park, which includes a tour of the stadium and college and job fairs.
Playing in Boston means Florida A&M is giving up three home games at Moore-Kittles Field. However, the Rattlers jumped at the opportunity when Red Sox Special Advisor Frank Jordan contacted FAMU head coach Jamey Shoupe about participating in the HBCU Legacy Weekend.
“It doesn’t favor us to go up there and play,’’ Shoupe said. “It’s a big conference weekend for us, and it’s three home games that we forfeited, but it’s Fenway Park. It’s an opportunity to represent FAMU, the MEAC and HBCUs across the country.’’
Shoupe says he will make time for the Rattlers to soak in their historic surroundings while in Boston, and will ensure that they understand the tradition that is associated with the historic stadium.
“It is a very important weekend for us,’’ Shoupe said. “We’ve got to keep that in mind and get ready to go up there and play.’’
North Carolina Central (12-8) is one game back of Southern Division leader Bethune-Cookman after dropping two of three games against Savannah State last weekend. Florida A&M (10-8) is third with two weeks remaining in the regular season. The top three teams in the northern and southern divisions advance to the 2015 MEAC Baseball Tournament, May 13-16, in Salisbury, Md.
“We’ve put ourselves in good position going into the final stretch of conference games,’’ North Carolina Central coach Jim Koerner said. “We control our own destiny. We have to take care of business in Boston.’’
Pitching has been the Eagles’ strong suit. They lead the conference with a team earned run average of 4.05, led by the trio of Cameron Scalzo (2.53), Alex Dandridge (2.53) and Devin Sweet (2.81).
Koerner says the Eagles were thrilled to learn they will play at Fenway Park.
“The energy level will be there because of the excitement of the trip,’’ Koerner said. “The thing you have to make sure you reinforce is the focus aspect that it is a conference weekend.”
Friday’s doubleheader begins at 11:00 a.m., at Jim Rice Field in Boston and concludes with a historic game at Fenway Park on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., and the game can be seen live on the New England Sports Network (NESN).
