B-CU Baseball Drops Series at NCCU with 8-3 Sunday Loss

DURHAM, N.C. – Four Bethune-Cookman batters tallied multi-hit performances on Sunday, but it was all for not as the Wildcats dropped an 8-3 decision in the rubber game of a three-game set at North Carolina Central in a MEAC contest played inside Durham Athletic Park.

Freshman Joseph Calamita closed the game on the hill for the Maroon and Gold, working the final three innings – allowing just his first earned run of the year in 13 appearances, scattering two hits and striking out three against two walks.

The offense was sparked by the play of four batters with two hits each – totaling the number of batters with a hit on the day for the Cats.

Jameel Edney and freshman third baseman Mijon Cummings each went 2-for-4 at the plate, while Nathan Bond and Bryant Munoz tallied a 2-for-5 day, respectively.

Bethune-Cookman will look to turn it around Tuesday evening when the Wildcats visit Jacksonville University for a contest set to be televised on ESPN3 at 7 p.m.

Rattler Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader at Savannah State on Sunday

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Florida A&M (14-19, 10-7 MEAC) swept the Sunday doubleheader at Savannah State (13-22, 6-8 MEAC) by scores of 9-4 and 3-2 at Tiger Field. The win in game one marked the 23rd win in MEAC play over the last two seasons for FAMU under head coach Jamey Shouppe. The 24 MEAC wins so far in 2015 are the most conference wins over any consecutive two-year period in school history. In the 3-2 game two win, all three Rattler runs came on walks with the bases loaded as the bullpen held the Tigers hitless over the final six innings.

Michael Birdsong tied a career-high with four hits, while going 4-for-5 with one RBI. Alec Wong was 5-for-9 with his third home run of the season, three RBI and three runs scored on the day. Jared Walker (2-for-3) and Brian Davis (2-for-4) each had multi-hits in game two.

Florida A&M and Savannah State will conclude the three-game series on Monday at 1:00 PM at Tiger Field. Due to impending weather still in the area, Monday’s game time may be moved to an earlier start time.

Late Rally Not Enough For Hawks

NORFOLK, Va.  -
The Spartans took advantage of a few Hawk errors to slowly build up a 5-0 lead against UMES Sunday. Undaunted, the visiting Hawks mounted a strong rally before finally falling to the hometown team by a 5-3 score. Norfolk State swept UMES to give them a three-game lead in the MEAC North. The Hawks remain in second place with a 9-6 MEAC record.

Four errors and a miscue by UMES led to runs in each of the first three innings. A throwing error on a pickoff attempt led to a sacrifice fly in the first, Syeed Madhi reached on a fielding error and advanced home on an outfielders' error in the second, and a passed ball allowed a third Spartan run in the third. The fourth error allowed a runner who reached safely to advance-he would eventually score.

Despite the 4-0 deficit, senior starter Jordan Bone was effective in his seventh start of the season. Over five innings he scattered six hits and two walks while striking out one batter. Due to the errors, none of the runs that scored were charged to Bone.

The Hawks will play eight of the next nine Hawks in Princess Anne, beginning Wednesday at 3:00p.m. with a non-conference matchup with George Washington and continuing next weekend with a three game set versus Delaware State.
