TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
Florida A&M (5-7, 3-2 MEAC) split Saturday’s doubleheader with Savannah State (5-9, 1-1 MEAC) at Moore-Kittles Field. Marlon Gibbs’ two-run single in the seventh inning gave the Rattlers a 3-2 win in game one. In game two, FAMU scored two runs in the ninth and had the tying run on base but fell 7-5. Gibbs went a combined 4-for-7 with three RBI and two runs scored on the day, while Brian Davis added a 3-for-6 day with two RBI and a run scored.

Peter Jackson went 2-for-4 with an RBI in game two.

Cleveland Westbrook (0-1) earned the win in game one after pitching 2.1 innings of relief allowing just one hit with three strikeouts and a walk. Kenny McDonald picked up his third save of the season after coming in to record the final out of the game. Starter Chase Jarrell allowed two runs in six innings with one walk and five strikeouts for the no decision.

David Ogilvie (0-2) took the game two loss as he only worked 2.1 innings and allowed six runs (three earned) with one walk and four strikeouts on seven hits.

B-CU Baseball Splits Doubleheader with NCCU

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman Baseball split a much-anticipated Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) doubleheader with North Carolina Central on Saturday at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. B-CU claimed the opener, 6-1, before dropping the nightcap, 4-0.

GAME ONE RECAP: Bethune-Cookman junior pitcher Alex Seibold tossed eight solid innings for the Wildcats, and catcher Clay Middleton was 3-for-3 at the plate to help B-CU claim the series-opener from visiting North Carolina Central in the first game of a doubleheader.

Coppin Splits with Army

KINSTON, N.C. – The Coppin State baseball team split a doubleheader against Army, winning the first game 4-3 in dramatic fashion and dropping the nightcap, 11-3, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference clash at Grainger Stadium.

In earning its first win of the 2015 season, Coppin State (1-4 overall) literally walked off the Black Knights by taking advantage of four walks and an error in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jonathan Calvin patiently drew a two-out bases loaded walk to help Coppin State stage a memorable rally.

Jack Kraft had a hit in both games to extend his hitting streak to six games. In addition to Kraft, Alex Brown (who had a hit in each game), Randal Mendez and George Dragon have reached base safely in every game this season.

Coppin State returns to action when it hosts Saint Bonaventure Thursday afternoon in a doubleheader at Joe Cannon Stadium beginning at noon.

Pitcher’s Duel Goes Wrong Way for Hawks

ROCK HILL, S.C.  -
Saturday's game between the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks and the Winthrop Eagles featured great pitching efforts from both sides. While the Hawks had two pitchers who were excellent, Winthrop's pitchers were exemplary as the home team outmuscled UMES in a pitchers' duel by a 1-0 score.

Senior Chipper Smith, a reliever so far this season, ended up as the Saturday's starter and did well as he rose to the occasion. He was dominant for much of the contest as he forced the Eagles down in order for several innings, and also worked out of a couple jams.

UMES senior Greg Turlik made some noise in a largely quiet night for the offense. He would go 2-for-3 on the afternoon with singles in the first and fifth innings. Sophomore Skylar Murray also singled in the fifth to put runners at first and second, but an interference call compounded by a strikeout kept the Hawks off the board.

In the sixth, Eagles right fielder Anthony Paulsen was able to break the deadlock with the earlier mentioned double off of Smith, scoring leadoff man Tyler Asbill.

The contest was played in a fast one hour and fifty-five minutes before a crowd of 389 patrons. The Sunday finale will begin at 1:00 p.m., with senior Jordan Bone scheduled to start for the Hawks.
