Florida A&M Outlasts Bethune-Cookman in 16 Innings to Clinch Series

Daytona Beach, Fla. – Marlon Gibbs drew a bases loaded walk in the 16th inning to score Jared Walker, as Florida A&M (3-6, 2-1 MEAC) takes the series from Bethune-Cookman (1-11, 1-2 MEAC) with a 6-0 win in game two at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Sunday. The Rattlers would score five more runs in the inning to put the four hour and 17 minute game away. FAMU’s pitching staff combined to record 21 strikeouts in 16 shutout innings for the win. B-CU took game one by a score of 6-2.

Walker and Peter Jackson each went 2-for-3 with a run scored for the offense in game one, while AJ Elkins went 3-for-6 with one RBI. Jackson had three more RBI in game two.

In game two, after a combined eight scoreless innings, FAMU finally had a chance to take the lead in the ninth inning. Kennedy reached on a throwing error to start the ninth but was out at second after a sacrifice bunt attempt by Jeremy Barlow. Barlow then took second on Michael Birdsong’s groundout. With two outs, Marlon Gibbs singled to left and Barlow came around third trying to score the go-ahead run, but was thrown out at home plate.

The Rattlers next travel to face Jacksonville at Sessions Field on Tuesday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 PM.

Spartans Drop 2 to IPFW in Georgia

EMERSON, Ga. -
Shane Trevino hit the go-ahead two-run home run to lead Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne over Norfolk State in game 1, and IPFW erupted for eight runs in the eighth inning to break a tie in the nightcap en route to an 8-4, 10-3 doubleheader sweep of the Spartans on Sunday at the Lake Point South Complex.

The Spartans, who were playing their first games in 15 days, fell to 2-3 with the two defeats, while IPFW improved to 7-2.

Hemmerich earned a no-decision in game 2 despite allowing just four hits and two runs with seven strikeouts in seven innings. Robbie Hiser (0-1) took the loss after moving from third base to the mound. He pitched a scoreless seventh, but walked two runners and had a pair of runs charged to him (one earned) in the eighth.

Trevino and Shannon Baker each had two RBI in the nightcap for IPFW, giving Trevino six for the day. Moore was 1-for-5 with a double in game 2, giving him three hits to lead NSU in the two games. Hall had his first two RBI of the season.

The teams are slated to play another doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. Monday.
