Spartans Rally in Game 2 for doubleheader split with Hornets
DOVER, Del. - Norfolk State scored six runs in the top of the seventh and final inning in the nightcap of a MEAC doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Delaware State, earning an 11-7 win in game two to salvage a split of the Spartans' first two conference games of the year.
NSU is 4-6 overall, 1-1 in MEAC Northern Division play after Sunday. DSU, which won the opener 17-5, is 1-10, 1-1.
Down to their final out with no one on base and looking at being swept in the doubleheader, the Spartans staged an improbable six-run rally off of just one hit. With two outs, both Angel Rosario and Kyle Vaas reached on Hornet errors to start the uprising. DSU pitchers Darrien Ragins and Zach Candeloro combined to walk the next four Spartans. Ragins walked Alex Mauricio to load the bases and then walked Ryan Kilmon to force in Rosario from third.
Candeloro relieved Ragins but had similar results. Candeloro issued a free pass to Denathan Dukes to force in pinch runner Noah Johnson with the tying run. Andre' Moore then drew a walk to plate Mauricio with the go-ahead run. A wild pitch by Candeloro allowed Kilmon to score to make it 9-7 in NSU's favor. DSU then went to Hunter McVey - the fourth Hornet pitcher of the inning - but he was greeted by a two-run single by Roger Hall to cap the rally and make it 11-7. All six runs in the frame were unearned.
But NSU relievers Cooper Jones and Josh Vales tossed scoreless innings of relief in the fifth and sixth, respectively, to keep NSU within striking distance. Vales earned the win to improve to 1-2 on the season.
Hall, Rosario and Kilmon had two hits apiece in the nightcap to help NSU notch a season high in runs scored. Hall knocked in three runs, while Dukes, Rosario and Moore scored a pair of runs apiece.
In game one, the Hornets scored in every inning but the seventh and got home runs from Onderko, Farley, Charles Dailey and Austin Bentley. Farley hit a grand slam in the fourth and Bentley ended the game early due to the 10-run rule with a three-run shot in the eighth.
Hiser was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Dukes knocked in two runs in the opener. For DSU, Bentley drove in five runs and Farley and Justin Allen drove in four each.
Matt Outman (1-1) took the loss in game one, allowing a career-high 10 runs on eight hits in four innings. Lane DeLeon (1-1) was the winning pitcher after striking out six Spartans and allowing two earned runs in five innings.
Hall and Rosario both ended the doubleheader with three hits and three RBI for the Spartans.
The teams conclude their three-game series with a noon game on Monday.
