UMES Baseball Announces Schedule Changes

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — The wintry weather on Delmarva has not deterred the Hawks’ baseball team attempts to play this weekend, as UMES prepares to travel to North Carolina to take part in a three-game series against the U.S. Naval Academy.

Beginning with a single game on Saturday and a twin billing on Sunday, the Hawks and Midshipmen will play in the town of Kinston at the site of Lenoir Community College. The Saturday contest will be 9 innings starting at 1:30p.m. While the doubleheader will consist of a seven inning and nine inning affair, with the first pitch scheduled for 11:00 in the morning.

The series replaces a tournament planned to be held at the Virginia Military Institute that was cancelled due to the frigid conditions and the further threat of inclement weather. It will also serve as a makeup date for the postponement of a game originally scheduled for February 18th in Annapolis.

Navy’s series against the Hawks will serve as a substitute for a cancelled series against the Norfolk State Spartans, scheduled to be held in Virginia.

In 2014, the Hawks swept a home-and-home series with the Naval Academy. UMES got five innings from current senior Chipper Smith and three hits apiece from junior Mike Escanilla and senior Greg Turlik, rallying for a 10-4 victory in Annapolis on April 8th. The following day, the Hawks built up a 6-0 lead behind the pitching of junior Will Turley and eventually fended off a Navy comeback to earn an 8-7 win in Princess Anne.

In addition to the three game series in Kinston, the Hawks will still host Navy on April 8th at Hawks Stadium.
