BALTIMORE, Md. – Head coach Sherman Reed and the Coppin State University baseball team has announced its 50-game schedule for the 2016 season.
The spring slate is highlighted by 26 home games at Joe Cannon Field, a trip to Atlanta along with home-and-home non-conference contests against Patriot League champion and NCAA Tournament participant Lehigh, Georgetown and Mount St. Mary’s.
Coppin State will also play Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opponents Delaware State, Norfolk State and Maryland-Eastern Shore. The Eagles will host reigning MEAC Northern Division champion Norfolk State twice and make a pair of visits to Maryland Eastern Shore. Coppin State will play a home-and-home set against Delaware State.
The non-conference portion of the schedule features matchups with opponents from the Patriot League, Sun Belt, East Coast Conference, Colonial Athletic Association, America East, Atlantic-10, Big East, Northeast Conference and the Atlantic Sun.
Coppin State starts the season with a three-game set at home against the New York Institute of Technology on Saturday, Feb. 20. Following the NYIT series, the Eagles visit Navy on Wednesday, Feb. 24 before traveling to Atlanta to meet Georgia State in a four-game series. Georgia State won 30 games last season.
Another highlight of the Eagles' non-conference slate is their annual visit to Towson on March 22, Reed's alma mater.
Prior to its conference opener at Maryland Eastern Shore on the weekend of March 19, 14 of Coppin State's first 17 games are against opponents it didn't play last season including Hofstra and NJIT.
Other important dates for the Eagles include its home conference opener against Delaware State on Friday, March 25. The Eagles also close the regular season conference schedule with two a weekend set against Norfolk State at home. Coppin State concludes its regular season with a road game at the University of Richmond on May 11.
The MEAC tournament runs from Thursday, May 19 through Sunday, May 22 in Salisbury, Maryland at Perdue Stadium, home of the Delmarva Shorebirds.
Coppin State returns Bryant Miranda (second-team All-MEAC selection), Jack Kraft and Bobby Dragon, who was named the Coppin State Male Newcomer of the Year. Dragon led the Eagles with a .295 batting average and finished the season as Coppin State's leader with 12 multi-hit games, 43 hits and a .370 slugging percentage
