DURHAM, N.C. – The 2014 MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Rookie of the Year on can add another accolade to his credentials on the diamond as North Carolina Central University’s Carlos Ortiz earned a spot on the 2014 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Baseball Team on Wednesday, becoming the first member of the modern era of the program to earn that distinction.
Ortiz finished his first year as an Eagle batting .321 with 51 hits in 45 games that included five doubles, a triple, six home runs, and 25 RBI as he earned second team All-MEAC honors manning the outfield as well.
He also batted an astounding .392 against league opponent, including a 4-for-5 effort in a huge comeback win over Florida A&M back on April 28, where he crushed two home runs in consecutive innings in helping the maroon and gray back from an 11-4 deficit to beat the Rattlers 15-11. Ortiz went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBI in the victory.
