MEAC Announces Baseball Preseason All-Conference Honors

NORFOLK, Va. – The Delaware State Hornets were predicted to win the northern division in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), the conference announced on Friday. Bethune-Cookman was chosen to finish first in the southern division, as voted on by the conference’s head baseball coaches and sports information directors.

North Carolina A&T’s Luke Tendler was selected as the conference's Preseason Player of the Year, while Bethune-Cookman’s Montana Durapau earned Preseason Pitcher of the Year accolades.

Tendler was the 2013 MEAC Preseason Player of the Year and was selected to the 2013 All-MEAC First Team. Tendler started in all 51 games and batted .369. He was able to compile 34 RBIs, 25 doubles, five home runs, and four doubles. He led the team in batting average, hits, doubles, triples, and on-base percentage.

Durapau was named to the 2013 All-MEAC First Team. Durapau ranked fifth in the conference among MEAC starters with a 2.89 ERA. He led the MEAC in starts with 16 games and second in the MEAC with 109 innings pitched. He also led the team in strikeouts with 78 while only walking 22 batters.

Delaware State won the northern division in 2013. The Hornets finished the season with a 21-3 MEAC mark and a 33-15 overall record. The Hornets were defeated in the first round of the 2013 MEAC Baseball tournament by North Carolina A&T and Bethune-Cookman.

Norfolk State was picked to finish second in the northern division, followed by Coppin State in third, and Maryland Eastern Shore rounding out the northern division predictions.

Bethune-Cookman was the 2013 MEAC Baseball Championship runner-ups. The Wildcats won a share of the division and finished the 2013 season with a 17-7 conference record and 34-24 overall. Bethune-Cookman has won 13 of the 15 MEAC Baseball Tournament Championships.

Defending MEAC tournament champion Savannah State was picked to finish second in the southern division, followed by North Carolina Central, North Carolina A&T, and Florida A&M.

Tendler (NCAT) and Durapau (BCU) are joined by Matt McClain (DSU), Eddie Sorondo (DSU),Bennie Robinson (FAMU), Todd Hagen (SSU), Cameron Cecil (DSU), David Hamlett (CSU), Josh Johnson (BCU), Hassan Evans (DSU), and Mike Alexander (DSU) on the 2014 Preseason All-MEAC team.

The 2014 MEAC Baseball Championship tournament is scheduled for May 15-18, 2014 at the Marty L. Miller Field on the campus of Norfolk State in Norfolk, Virginia.
