Eagles suffer setback at Towson

TOWSON, Md. – Dalton Cozart, Jack Kraft and Alex Brown all had hits for the Coppin State baseball team during a 13-1 setback to Towson at chilly John B. Schuerholz Park on Thursday afternoon.

The Eagles (6-13) had their two-game winning streak ended by the crosstown Tigers (13-8). Coppin State scored in the ninth inning when Kraft drove in his team-leading 13th RBI with a single to right field that scored Cozart, who had a two-out single to help the Eagles avoid the shutout. Kraft is hitting .324 on the season for Coppin State. Brown also had a one-out single in the seventh inning for Coppin State.

On the mound, Jhar Devilme and Mike Roberts combined to toss three scoreless innings and strikeout four batters. It was Roberts’ second appearance this season and he appears to be rounding into midseason form. The Tigers are the reigning Colonial Athletic Association tournament champion and are coming off an appearance in last year’s NCAA tournament.

Towson senior rightfielder Dominic Fratantuono hit a triple and a two-run home run while driving in five runs to lead Towson University to its fourth win in its last five games,

Coppin State, which currently leads the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, hosts Norfolk State in a three-game series. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and conclude the series Sunday with a single game starting at 12 p.m.
