Bethune-Cookman's Beverlin Named Finalist for Giant Steps Award

ORLANDO, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman Head Coach Jason Beverlin was announced on March 19 as one of three coaching finalists for the National Student-Athlete Day Giant Steps Award, presented by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports.

The awards target individuals who use sport to make positive social change and who overcome adversity and still succeed.

Beverlin drew notice for a health scare over the summer in a bout with a rare, painful skin condition which put his life at risk. His painful ordeal was detailed in the Orlando Sentinel by feature columnist Shannon Owens during the preseason in February.

Previous award winners for the coach award were Lincoln High School football’s John Kitna (2013) and Wake Forest Baseball’s Tom Walter (2012). The 2013 award winners were honored on Tuesday, October 29 at the Annual Giant Steps Awards Banquet and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in Orlando, Fla.

The Wildcats return to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play this weekend with a three-game set versus Savannah State at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
