Aggies best Eagles in Twinbill sweep
GREENSBORO, N.C. – In the opening Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference series of the 2014 baseball season, North Carolina Central University dropped both games to arch-rival North Carolina A&T 6-5 in 10 innings in game one and 5-1 in game two on Saturday afternoon from War Memorial Stadium in Greensboro, N.C.
In typical NCCU fashion, the Eagles jumped out front in the top of the second inning when Carter Williamson and Christian Triplett hit back-to-back jacks putting the maroon and gray up 2-0.
The Aggies finally got a run on the board in the fourth to make 2-1 and the Eagles answered with an RBI single by Triplett to score Williamson and put NCCU back up 3-1.
A&T added a run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 3-2, but once again the Eagles answered in the top of the seventh on a James Dey single scoring Tyson Simpson to make it 4-2.
NC A&T plated two runs in their next at-bat in the bottom of the seventh on Kyle Clary’s RBI double and Dylan Hipp’s RBI single to right field to knot the game at 4-4.
Moving to the ninth, the maroon and gray had a runner at second and one out, but A&T’s Luke Tendler made a diving catch, forcing a double play and keeping the Eagles off the board.
After a 1-2-3 frame in the tenth for the Eagles, A&T plated the game winning run in quick fashion in the bottom-half of that frame on three consecutive hits as Cameron Jergens drove in the winning run with a single to right centerfield as the Aggies took game one 6-5.
Game two saw NC A&T’s Charles Cantrell put on a gem of a performance for the home faithful as he threw a complete game, allowed just four hits and struck out 12 batters on the way to a 5-1 win.
Tendler ripped a two-run homer to right centerfield in the bottom-half of the first frame to put A&T up 2-0 and the Aggies never looked back.
A&T (6-2, 2-0 MEAC) got solid effort at-the dish from backstop Lester Salcedo who went 4-for-6 (.667 batting average) with a run scored and three RBI, while Tendler went 3-for-7 (.429 batting average) with a home run, double, three RBI, and three runs scored.
NCCU (1-7-1, 0-2 MEAC) will look to get off the four-game skid on Sunday in the series finale slated for 1:00 p.m. from War Memorial Stadium in Greensboro, N.C.
