Errors doom Eagles in loss to High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. – North Carolina Central University committed five errors resulting in eight unearned runs for High Point University as the host Panthers cruised to a 16-3 baseball victory on Tuesday at Williard Stadium in High Point, N.C.

The Eagles’ fielding and throwing woes started early, as three errors allowed five unearned runs in High Point’s seven-run first inning.

After the rough start, NCCU managed to keep it close, trailing 9-3 after plating two runs in the top of the sixth. High Point pulled away by scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth, another run in the seventh and four more in the eighth.

Offensively, shortstop Zack Lee and third baseman Tyson Simpson continued to top NCCU with two hits each. Simpson tallied an RBI and his fifth double of the season. Rookie centerfielder Carlos Ortiz added a hit, an RBI and a run scored for the Eagles.

NCCU (1-5-1) returns to action this weekend (March 1-2) with a three-game series against rival North Carolina A&T at War Memorial Stadium in Greensboro, N.C.  Saturday’s doubleheader starts at 1 p.m., with the same first pitch time for the single game on Sunday.

Bethune-Cookman Falls to Florida Gulf Coast, 13-10, in Big-Hitting Series Finale

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman starter Montana Durapau threw a complete game two-hitter, in tandem with crucial late-inning run support, to lead the Wildcats (3-4) past the Stetson Hatters (2-6), Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson. The Wildcats went out front early and added late runs to top the Hatters 4-1.

After the fourth, Durapau (1-0) only allowed a single hit, capping off the complete game with a pop-up to center field to earn the win. Making his fifth career appearance against the Hatters, and third start, Durapau now holds a 3-0 record against Stetson, with one save and just one no decision. The Deltona, Fla. senior recorded no walks and struck out six batters in the victory.

Durapau also notched his fifth career complete game performance.

At the plate, Eric Sams topped the Wildcat, batting 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

The Wildcats open Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) on Friday against Florida A&M, making their first road trip of the 2014 campaign. The Rattlers (3-5) dropped a 7-6 non-conference tilt to Troy on Tuesday afternoon.
