ORLANDO, Fla. - Making the second Bethune-Cookman player to earn notable individual honors in the summer league, outfielder Josh Johnson has extended his solid play into the summer, appearing for the second ranked Orlando Monarchs. Johnson was recently named to the Florida Collegiate Summer League (FCSL) All-Star Team, league officials announced.

“When I heard the news, it was after a doubleheader that we won both games, so I was already really excited about the two-game sweep, but it was very exciting to earn the individual awards,” Johnson said.

“I was also really happy because a few of my teammates also made it and I feel that we’re going to represent the program really well,” Johnson added.

After finishing the 2013 NCAA season batting a team-best .322, Johnson has risen to the season during his summer in Orlando, batting .333 through 21 games, with two doubles and a triple, leading the team with 11 RBI. He’s also snagged 16 stolen bases, which leads Orlando and ranks second in the FCSL.

“I’ve combined the knowledge that Coach [Barrett] Shaft and Coach [Kenny] Smith have been giving me the past couple of years with [Orlando Monarchs] Coach Kenny Norman’s philosophy of hitting, and that has really helped me to become a better baseball player now and in the future,” Johnson said.

As part of the FCSL All-Star Team, Johnson is scheduled to start as center fielder for the South squad during the Florida League All-Star Game at Sanford Memorial Stadium, July 9 at 7 p.m.

Fellow B-CU outfielder Eros Modena will also be appearing in an All-Star Game on Tuesday in Hampton, Va., representing the Columbia Blowfish on the Coastal Plain League’s West Division squad.

The Florida Collegiate Summer League is a wood bat baseball league with six teams in Central Florida. Founded in 2003, the Florida League provides a valuable opportunity for college players to play wood bat baseball against top-level competition with the goal of preparing them for a career in professional baseball.

The Florida League is recognized by Baseball America as one of the top summer leagues in the United States. Presently, 196 former Florida League players have been drafted by Major League Baseball (MLB) teams – with 32 former players taken in the 2012 MLB draft.
