CSU's Roberts Added to Cape Cod League Roster

BALTIMORE -- Coppin State's Michael Roberts has been added to the roster of the Cotuit Kettleers of the prestigious Cape Cod League the team announced on Sunday.

Roberts, who is the first Coppin State player to ever play in the Cape Cod League, finished his season playing for the Hamilton Joe's of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League and was added to the roster for the stretch run of the Kettleers season.

"This is a once in a lifetime opportunity," said Roberts. "It blew me away when I received the call and I'm honored to have the chance to play in the Cape Cod League. I plan to take everything one pitch at a time."

Roberts had a brilliant summer for the Hamilton Joe's. He finished the season with a 3-1 record and posted four saves with an ERA of 0.71. In 25.1 innings pitched he allowed just 12 hits and two earned runs and was named to the all-star game.

“Michael is an example of what hard work can do," said Coppin State head coach Sherman Reed. "When we recruited him out of high school his signing received very little fanfare and now he has proven to be worthy of mention amongst the top collegiate pitchers in our region. Our pitching coach, Greg Beckman, has a very rigorous conditioning and weight training program and Michael is generally the first in and last out of the gym. He is deserving of all the accolades that come his way.”

Roberts joins the Kettleers for their final seven games of the regular season and for the playoffs. Cotuit currently has a 21-15-1 overall record and is in second place in the division to the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. The Kettleers have already clinched a berth in the playoffs which will begin on August 6.

Cotuit is coached by former North Carolina head coach Mike Roberts who is in his 10th consecutive season as the head coach of the Kettleers. Roberts is also the father of current Baltimore Orioles standout Brian Roberts.

The Cape Cod League is widely viewed as the premier amateur baseball league in the country and is in its 129th year of operation. The league features 10 teams across the Cape and is comprised of the top collegiate players in the country.
