Norfolk State's Markel Named to All-State Second Team

NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State first baseman Zach Markel was named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) university division all-state second team, the organization announced Thursday.

Markel was one of the Spartans’ top offensive catalysts as a junior this past season, his first at NSU after transferring from Potomac State College. Markel batted .320 with 11 doubles, two home runs and 35 runs batted in en route to second-team All-MEAC honors. He either led or tied for the team-lead with his 56 hits, 35 RBI, 24 walks and 11 doubles.

Virginia won three of VaSID’s top awards for the 2013 season. Outfielder Mike Papi was voted Player of the Year, Joe McCarthy was chosen Rookie of the Year and Kyle Crockett was named Pitcher of the Year. William & Mary’s Jamie Pinzino was voted Coach of the Year.
