MEAC ANNOUNCES BASEBALL WEEKLY HONORS

 

NORFOLK, Va. (April 8, 2013) – Norfolk State junior Zach Markel and Bethune-Cookman’s Anthony Stokes earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Co-Player of the Week honors in baseball, the conference announced on Monday.  Scott Garner of Bethune-Cookman was named Pitcher of the Week, while North Carolina Central’s Eric Kimber earned Rookie of the Week accolades.

 

Markel (1B, 6-2, 205, Jr., Elizabethville, Pa.) batted .444 (4-for-9), including two homeruns, one double, three runs scored, and five RBI to aid the Spartans to a 2-1 conference series victory over Delaware State last week. The junior stole a base and added 28 putouts in the victories. He also posted a 1.22 slugging percentage during the three game series.

 

Stokes (1B, 6-3, 225, Jr., Chesapeake, Va.) went 4-for-9 (.444) with one home run, one triple, one double, seven RBI, and two runs scored in two wins against Florida A&M. The junior batted .600 (3-for-5) with a grand slam, seven RBI, and one run scored in a 16-3 win over the Rattlers. On the defensive end Stokes registered 16 putouts and four assists in the two games.

 

Garner (P, 6-2, 190, Jr., Port Orange, Fla.) earned a 1.00 ERA in a complete game win against Florida A&M. The junior struck out seven batters while walking just one of the 30 batters he faced.

 

Kimber (OF, 6-1, 180, r-So., Greensboro, N.C.) hit .556 (5-for-9) with one double, one run, and two stolen bases in three games for the Eagles. Kimber went 3-for-4 (.750) with one run to lead the Eagles to a game three and series clinching win over North Carolina A&T.

 

Other Top Performances

 

Chris Arnold (SSU) was a perfect 4-for-4 (1.000) from the plate with one double and one stolen base in a 3-6 loss against South Carolina Beaufort.

 

Michael Austin (B-CU) pitched 3.2 innings in relief recording two strikeouts in a 16-3 win over Florida A&M.

 

Connor Breslin (UMES) batted .500 (2-for-4) with one double, one run, and one RBI in a 14-4 loss to Wilmington.

 

Anderson Burgess (CSU) struck out six batters over 7.0 innings to earn a 5-3 win over Maryland Eastern Shore.

 

Shane Davies (CSU) earned a 1.29 ERA over 7.0 innings to capture a 3-1 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore.

 

Luis Diaz (NCCU) hit one triple, two doubles, seven runs, and eight RBI to aid the Eagles to a 3-3 mark last week.

 

Jeffrey Fleetwood (UMES) went a perfect 3-for-3 (1.000) from the plate in a 1-3 loss to Coppin State.

 

Kelvin Freeman (NCAT) batted .353 (6-for-17) with one home run, one triple, one double, seven RBI, and four runs to aid the Aggies to a 2-3 mark last week.

 

Josh Ganus (NCAT) pitched 7.0 innings allowing seven hits and three earned runs to aid the Aggies to a 7-3 win over North Carolina Central.

 

David Hamlett (CSU) went 4-for-5 (.800) with one double three runs scored and one RBI in a 7-3 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore

 

Chris Horne (NSU) garnered a 3.00 ERA in 6.0 innings pitched in a 5-3 win over Delaware State.

 

Kyle McGowin (SSU) held UAB to four hits and struck out five to tally a 0.00 ERA in 6.0 innings in a Tigers’ victory.

 

Jordan Quinn (NCCU) pitched eight innings allowing five hits while striking out six in a 6-1 win over Virginia State.

 

Will Turley (UMES) pitched 6.0 innings allowing five hits while striking out two in a 3-1 loss to Coppin State.
