J.P. BLACK DOMINATES IN 4-1 COMPLETE GAME VICTORY OVER GW

ARLINGTON, Va. – J.P. Black (1-4) pitched a gem for UMES, going all nine innings to secure a 4-1 victory over George Washington at Barcroft Park on Tuesday.  The Hawks improve to 7-36 while the Colonials fall to 14-27.

The Hawks got on the board in the top of the second.  After Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) got hit by a pitch from GW starter Danny O’Donnell (0-2), Jeffrey Fleetwood (Delmar, Del.) hit a line drive double to right-center to bring in Campbell and give UMES a 1-0 lead.

Black allowed just two hits in the final four innings on the mound to secure the 4-1 victory for the Hawks, the first midweek win for UMES this season.  Black earned the complete game for his first win of the year, striking out three batters.

The loss went to O’Donnell, who pitched five innings with three runs and two strikeouts.

Fleetwood led the Hawks with a 3-for-5 day, scoring a run and driving in another.  Aigner reached base three times in a 2-for-3 contest with a walk while James was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

B-CU's Sunshine State Success Continues with 7-5 Victory at FGCU

FT. MYERS, Fla. - The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats (27-19) claimed a back-and-forth non-conference contest at Florida Gulf Coast (22-15), Tuesday evening at Swanson Stadium, using a pair of big innings and solid relief pitching to hold on for a 7-5 win over the Eagles.

The Wildcats came out swinging from the start, as Brandon Turner got B-CU started with a bunt for base hit, and was joined on base by David Lee, who battled out a walk. Anthony Stokes capitalized for B-CU, putting a perfectly-placed RBI single up the middle for the first-inning lead.

B-CU showed few signs of slowing down in the top of the second, as three consecutive singles led to another run. Turner chopped an RBI single to the left side of the infield and Lee followed up with a line drive RBI to left center for the 3-0 lead after two complete innings, consuming 55 minutes of game time.

Struggles locating pitches in the bottom of the third created an opportunity for the Eagles to get back in the game, as one run scored on Michael Suchy’s single to left field, and a second came home as an RBI walk, the fourth of the inning, narrowing the B-CU advantage to 3-2.

B-CU broke through English’ attack in the fifth as Eric Sams first reached on a walk, breaking the streak of fanned Wildcats, reaching third using a hit-and-run on Matt Noble’s single through the right side. Sams overtook home on Middleton’s bunt single down the right line to extend B-CU’s lead for 4-2.

Noble and Middleton scored on consecutive FGCU errors, allowing McCarty to reach third. Eros Modena reached on a fielding error at shortstop, sending McCarty home for the 7-2 lead.

The Wildcats were met with miscues of their own in the bottom of the frame, as three consecutive batters reached on free bases, with another scoring on a wild pitch. The Eagles brought in two more runs on Suchy’s single deep to left center with two outs, slimming B-CU’s lead back to two runs at 7-5.

Using a mixture of Gabe Rivera, RJ Brown and Ritchie Erath in relief, FGCU held the Wildcats without any insurance runs across the final four frames, and the Wildcats matched the effort with outstanding relief performances from Byron Ferguson and Jordan Dailey, who earned his 10th save of the 2013 campaign.

Christopher Waltermire (4-1) earned the win, pitching 1.2 innings with two hits, while Ferguson followed up with two innings, allowing one hit and striking out two before giving way to Dailey, who allowed no hits in pitching the final frame.

Turner and Middleton led the Wildcats at the plate, each batting 2-for-4 with an RBI. Turner also scored one run and Middleton added a pair. Sams also went 2-for-4 adding one run scored.

NCCU Loses to Campbell On The Road

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – North Carolina Central University mustered one hit and the pitching staff for Campbell University combined for 16 strikeouts including 13 from starter Matt Marksberry as the Eagles dropped their fifth straight contest, losing a 10-0 decision at Jim Perry Stadium Wednesday night in Buies Creek, N.C.

Meeting no. 17 between these two started out in favor of the home squad as a leadoff walk and a stolen base by Ben McQuown followed up by a David Olson RBI single put the Camels up 1-0 after the first inning.

From the top of the first all the way to the fourth frame, Marksberry struck out eight batters including seven straight.  The only baserunners for the Eagles came on an Akeem Hood leadoff walk and Luis Diaz reached on an error by the Campbell shortstop.

After plating a run to take a 2-0 lead in the third inning, NCCU starter Jordan Quinn apparently hit David Olson which gave the volatile Camels the opening they needed as Elijah Trail reached on a Diaz error putting runners at second and third with two outs.  Designated hitter Blake Boyce drilled a single through the left side to score both runners and took a 4-0 lead.

NCCU did not record a hit until Eric Kimber’s single to right field, but that did not mean the Eagles did not get runners in scoring position.  In the fourth through seventh inning, the maroon and gray left at least one runner stranded including two in both the sixth and the seventh inning.

Campbell (36-8, 14-4 Big South) scored three runs in the fifth and sixth innings to put the game out of reach at 10-0.  In those two frames, the Camels record two doubles in a home run to take charge in the contest.

NCCU (23-22, 10-11 MEAC) saw Christian Neal work the final two innings allowing only one hit with two strikeouts.
