MEAC Announces Baseball Weekly Honors

NORFOLK, Va., April 22, 2013 – Bethune-Cookman junior Anthony Stokes earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week honors in baseball, the conference announced on Monday.  Chris Horne of Norfolk State and Delaware State’s Elliott Gardner were named Co-Pitcher of the Week, while Savannah State’s Lee Moore earned Rookie of the Week accolades.

Stokes (1B, 6-3, 225, Jr., Chesapeake, Va.) went 9-for-20 (.450) from the plate, including seven RBI and three runs scored to aid the Wildcats to a 4-1 record last week. On the defensive end the junior had 41 putouts and six assists in five games. Stokes batted .667 (2-for-3) with one run and two RBI in a 4-2 win over North Carolina A&T.

Horne (P, 6-1, 220, Sr., Windsor, Va.) pitched his second consecutive complete-game shutout to lead the Spartans to a 6-0 win over Coppin State. The senior struck out a career high nine batters and walked one while allowing only seven hits over 9.0 innings.

Gardner (6-1, 185, Sr., Middletown, Del.) posted a 0.00 ERA over 7.0 innings while striking out a season-high nine batters in an 11-0 win over Coppin State. The senior extended his streak of 29 consecutive scoreless innings in four games.

Moore (OF, 6-2, 180, Fr., Decatur, Ga.) batted .385 (5-for-13) with one double, four RBI, four runs scored, and two stolen bases to aid the Tigers to a 3-1 mark last week. The rookie went 2-for-3 (.667) from the plate with three RBI and one stolen base to lead Savannah State to a series sweep over North Carolina Central.

Michael Austin (B-CU) pitched 3.0 innings in relief recording two strikeouts against Miami.

Cameron Cecil (DSU) went 2-for-3 (.667) from the plate with three runs scored and two stolen bases against Maryland Eastern Shore.

Jordan Dailey (B-CU) earned a save while striking out two in a 7-5 win over North Carolina A&T.

Shane Davies (CSU) pitched 7.0 innings and struck out four in a 2-1 win against Norfolk State.

Mike Escanilla (UMES) batted 1.000 (3-for-3) from the plate against Delaware State.

Kevin Herlihy (SSU) went 2-for-4 (.500) with one double and two RBI in a 4-2 win over North Carolina Central.

Kyle McGowin (SSU) pitched 8.0 innings allowing seven hits and one run against North Carolina Central.

George Michael (DSU) pitched 1.0 innings with one strikeout to earn the save against Maryland Eastern Shore.

Ruben Rios (NCCU) pitched 5.0 innings earning a 1.80 ERA in a 5-1 win over nationally ranked Campbell.

James Smith (UMES) struck out four over 6.0 innings pitched in a 7-3 loss to Delaware State.

Killian Strenn (NSU) was a perfect 3-for-3 (1.000) from the plate with one triple, two runs scored, and one stolen base against Coppin State.

Ronald Thompson (NCCU) batted .600 (3-for-5) with one double and one RBI against Savannah State.
