MEAC ANNOUNCES BASEBALL WEEKLY HONORS

NORFOLK, Va. – April 1, 2013 –  Delaware State senior Ryan Haas earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week honors in baseball, the conference announced on Monday. Teammate Elliott Gardner was named Pitcher of the Week, while Bethune-Cookman’s Chris Biocic earned Rookie of the Week accolades.

Haas (1B, 6-1, 225, Sr., Bear, Del.) batted .667 (6-for-9), including six runs scored, three doubles and nine RBI to aid the Hornets to a 3-0 conference series victory over Maryland Eastern Shore last week. Haas stole a base and added 25 putouts in the victories. He also posted a .750 on-base percentage for the week.

Gardner (P, 6-2, 185, Sr., Middletown, Del.) earned the win with a 0.00 ERA in 7.0 innings against Maryland Eastern Shore. Gardner did not allow any runs earned or unearned and struck out five of the 23 batters he faced.

Biocic (C, 6-4, 210, Fr., Merritt Island, Fla.) hit .429 (3-for-7) with one triple, one double and five RBI in four games for the Wildcats. Biocic posted a .857 slugging percentage along with a .556 on-base percentage. Defensively, he posted three assists and 14 putouts.

 

Other Top Performances

Heath Blackburn (FAMU) earned the win with a 0.00 ERA in 7.0 innings of work against North Carolina A&T.

Luis Diaz (NCCU) was 4-for-7 (.429) with three runs scored and an RBI in a doubleheader sweep of Longwood.

Mike Escanilla (UMES) was 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one assist and two putouts in the third game against Delaware State.

Kelvin Freeman (NCAT) batted .412 for the week with a home run, five doubles, and six RBI in five games.

David Hamlett (CSU) batted .364 with three doubles and three RBI in three games against the Spartans.

George Michael (DSU) earned the save with a 0.00 ERA, striking out one an allowing only two hits in 2.0 innings.

Eros Modena (B-CU) batted .353 (6-for-17) with one home run, one triple and six RBI to aid the Wildcats to a 2-2 mark.

Brent Moore (NCAT) picked up his third win of the year while allowing two runs, two unearned runs and striking out four in 7.0 innings.

Ruben Rios (NCCU) held Longwood to four hits and struck out one to tally a 0.00 ERA in 7.0 innings of play last week.

Michael Roberts (CSU) struck out seven of 15 batters in 3.2 innings of work in three games for the Eagles.

Benny Robinson (FAMU) led the Rattlers in hits against Stetson and North Carolina A&T.

Jevanny Tolentino (NCAT) totaled six runs scored, one double and two RBI, including a .412 batting average in five games for the Aggies.
