DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Central Michigan Chippewas (4-8) snapped a five-game Bethune-Cookman Wildcats (7-7) win streak with a late inning scoring outburst to split the two-game series handing B-CU an 11-1 loss, Wednesday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
The Wildcats were sharp in the opening stanza, going to work quickly, as right fielder Josh Johnson led off with a hard line drive to right field, was sacrificed to second, and came home on a David Lee full-count backside single, claiming the early one-run lead.
Starter Scott Garner kept the Chippewas contained, throwing three complete frames with one walk and just a single hit, striking out three.
A single big hit in the top of the fourth began to sway the momentum of the game away from the homestanding Wildcats. Relieving Garner in the top of the fourth, Ali Simpson surrendered a second-pitch home run by center fielder Nick Regnier beyond the left field wall to knot the game at 1-1.
CMU claimed their first team on a two-run triple in the sixth, followed by an RBI fielder's choice extended the Chippewas' lead to 4-1.
Central Michigan again converted opportunities in the eighth and ninth frames, using a combined six hits to tally scoring innings of four and three, extending the lead to ten runs, as the Wildcats were downed 11-1.
CMU's Regnier was a driving force for the Chippewas all night, hitting 3-for-6 with four RBI and two runs scored.
At the plate for B-CU, Lee batted 2-for-3 with the Wildcats' lone RBI, while Johnson was 2-for-4.
