BALTIMORE -- Freshman Shane Davies tossed a complete-game six-hitter in game one and Coppin State used an eight-run third inning in game two to post a doubleheader sweep of New York Tech on Tuesday at Joe Cannon Stadium.
Coppin State won the opener 4-1 behind the arm of Davies and then used the eight-run third inning on its way to a 10-7 victory in game two.
It marked Coppin State's first doubleheader sweep since taking both games against Maryland Eastern Shore on March 28, 2010.
Alex Brown and Chris Kashangaki each drove in three runs in the doubleheader to pace the CSU offense. Chris Godfrey added three hits and an RBI and Colin Dower scored three runs, had two hits and drove in a run.
Davies went 7.0 innings and allowed just six hits and one run in the opener. He struck out five and didn't walk a batter in recording his first victory of the season. He threw just 87 pitches, 61 of which were strikes, in the win.
Coppin State (3-8) took advantage of a New York Tech error to score the first run of the game in the opener in the bottom of the third inning.
Dower reached on a bunt single and moved to second on a throwing error by the pitcher. Jack Kraft followed with a single and Kashangaki plated Dower when he reached on a fielder's choice giving Coppin State a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles then struck for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break the game open.
Dalton Cozart walked to lead off the inning and moved to third when Godfrey reached on a sacrifice bunt and moved to second on a throwing error.
Brown followed with a two-run double to right that pushed the CSU lead to 3-0. Jay Maletz then delivered Brown with an RBI single that extended the lead to 4-0.
The Bears (0-5) finally reached Davies in the top of the seventh, but the freshman induced a comebacker to end the game with runners on first and second.
Coppin State had to rally to win the second game and complete the sweep after spotting New York Tech three runs in the top of the third inning.
The Eagles responded by sending 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the third inning on its way to scoring eight times. Kashangaki had a two-run single and Godfrey, Nathan Pitts, Maletz, Dower and Kraft each had RBI during the inning.
New York Tech scored twice in the top of the fifth inning to cut the lead to 8-5, but Cozart and Brown had RBI hits during Coppin State's two-run sixth inning that upped the lead to 10-5.
The Bears scored two times in the top of the seventh inning and had the tying run on base, but Michael Roberts got a ground out to end the game and earn his first save of the season.
