North Carolina A&T Falls to Duke, 15-1

GREENSBORO—North Carolina A&T wasn’t able to protect an early lead on Wednesday evening at War Memorial Stadium, as the Aggie pitchers struggled to consistently hit the strike zone in a 15-1 loss to Duke.

The Aggies (7-17, 3-5 MEAC) walked eight and hit two batters, giving a total of 10 free bases to the Blue Devils (13-13, 3-6 ACC).

The Blue Devils scored off of each of the four A&T pitchers in the contest, who combined for 11 hits and nine strikeouts.

North Carolina A&T redshirt senior Tim Jones, making his second appearance, had a strong first two innings, retiring four straight batters and not allowing a hit. The Aggies took a 1-0 lead in the second frame. With one out, third baseman Dairio Little walked. He stole second, and scored on an RBI single by catcher Stefan Jordan.

But then Jones ran into a little trouble in the third. Duke got two on with a walk and an HBP to start the frame. A sac bunt by second baseman Angelo La Bruna advanced both runners. Right fielder Jeff Kremer then tied the game with an RBI groundout to first baseman Kelvin Freeman. Jones next walked a batter to put two on for Chris Marconcini, who singled up the middle to make it a 3-1 ballgame. An RBI double by third baseman Jordan Betts brought home the fourth Duke run.

Tre-Von Johnson Homers In UMES 9-4 DEFEAT TO Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Tre-von Johnson's first home run of the season was not enough as the Hawks fell to Navy 9-4 at Max Bishop Stadium on Wednesday. UMES falls to 5-21 while Navy improves to 12-12.

After UMES starter J.P. Black (0-1) got through the first inning in order, the Midshipmen got a multi-run frame in the second. After Greg Dupell singled, Brandon Beans hit a triple and Kash Manzelli earned a double as Navy got a pair of runs in three batters. After Chris Campbell walked and a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with one out, a David Wiedeman sacrifice fly and a Robert Currie RBI single gave the home team a 4-0 advantage.

In the top of the third, UMES cut into the deficit with a big hit. With one out, Stephen Bull lined a single up the middle. Two batters later, Johnson hit the ball over the right-center field wall for a two-run home run, his first of the season, to make it 4-2 Navy.

After the Midshipmen got a run back in the third, Black retired the first two batters of the fourth. But after a hit by pitch and a single, Greg Dupell hit a three-run home run to left-center to push Navy up 8-2.

The Hawks countered in the next half-inning. Bull led off the frame with a walk and stole second, taking third on a ground out. Following a strikeout, Byron Campbell doubled over the center fielder's head, scoring Bull and increasing his reached base streak to 23 games. After Jeffrey Fleetwood was hit by a pitch, Brandon Schott singled on a ground ball to left, scoring Campbell and getting the Hawks within four 8-4.

Navy added a run in the bottom of the sixth off an RBI single by Brandon Beans, to make the score 9-4 Midshipmen.

UMES did not allow a run in the rest of the game after scoreless innings thrown by Zachary Saca and Devin Repine. But Navy did not allow a run either in the final three innings as UMES fell 9-4.

Navy starter Johnny Schoberl (1-3) was on a pitch count and earned the win, going three innings with two runs surrendered and four strikeouts. Black got the loss, being charged eight runs in five innings, striking out two.

Bull had his third multi-hit game in a row, going 2-for-3 with a pair of walks, two runs scored and a stolen base. Schott increased his hitting streak to eight games, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. With his home run, Johnson was 1-for-5 with two RBI.

The Midshipmen were led by Dupell, who was 2-for-4 with three RBI, a walk and two runs scored. Beans was 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Dave Milanes batted 2-for-5 with a pair of runs.

Castner, Tribe Shut Down NSU, 4-0

NORFOLK, Va. – J.T. Castner’s strong pitching and a four-run sixth inning were all the William & Mary baseball team needed in a 4-0 shutout of Norfolk State Tuesday night at Marty L. Miller Field.

In a contest that only took one hour and 45 minutes, both teams were cruising in the early part of the game thanks to first-pitch swinging offenses. NSU starter Cooper Jones pitched a solid five innings of work before running into trouble in the sixth.

A pair of walks and a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with one out. Charley Gould then hit one past the left side of the pitcher’s mound, and shortstop Justin Lee’s throw to home was not in time to prevent the first run of the game.

Ryan Hissey put a perfectly placed bunt between home plate and the pitcher’s mound to score the second run. A single into left field loaded the bases still with one out before two more runs came home on the same play.

Jackson Shaver hit one to second base, and NSU got the out at second. The runner on third scored, but Lee caught the trailing runner too far off third base. An error on the Spartans in the rundown, however, allowed that fourth run of the inning to cross the plate.

An eighth-inning single by junior Tyon Ore was NSU’s only base runner over the last four innings of the game. The Tribe improved to 18-8 on the season, while NSU fell to 7-16.

Castner (2-1), meanwhile, struck out eight and allowed only two hits in his nine-inning gem. Jones (0-3) suffered the loss after allowing three earned runs on three hits in 5.1 innings of work.

Shaver and Ryan Lindemuth each had two of William & Mary’s seven total hits in the game.
