MEAC Announces Baseball Weekly Honors

Delaware State junior Mike Alexander earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week honors in baseball, the conference announced on Monday. Bethune-Cookman’s Anthony Stokes was named Pitcher of the Week, while Savannah State’s Mendez Elder earned Rookie of the Week accolades.

Alexander (OF/C, 5-10, 180, Jr., New Castle, Del.) batted .643 (9-for-14), including one triple, one double and eight RBI to aid the Hornets to a 3-1 mark last week and a 3-0 conference series win against Coppin State. Alexander stole five bases and added 19 putouts.

Stokes (P, 6-2, 225, Jr., Chesapeake, Va.) earned the win with a 1.50 ERA in 6.0 innings against South Florida. Stokes allowed just one run and one unearned run and did not walk any of the 24 batters he faced.

Elder (OF, 5-9, Fr., Atlanta, Ga.) batted .500 (6-for-12) with two doubles, two runs scored and five RBI to aid the Tigers to a 2-1 mark last week. In the second game of a doubleheader against North Carolina A&T he was 2-for-3 from the plate (.667) with two hits and six putouts.

Other Top Performances

Justin Bhatti (NSU) tallied a 3.68 ERA and struck out nine in 7.1 innings of play last week.

Robert Barefoot (NSU) had a career-high two RBI while hitting .667 against Maryland Eastern Shore.

Luis Diaz (NCCU) led his team in batting with .471 along with one triple, two doubles and two RBI.

David Duncan (FAMU) struck out six batters in 7.1 innings of action against North Carolina Central.

Mike Escanilla (UMES) was 3-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI against Georgetown.

Gavin Guarrea (NCCU) earned three saves last week for the Eagles while pitching 2.1 innings.

Bryce Farrar (FAMU) tallied a double and two RBI in a 5-4 loss to North Carolina Central.

Chase Kyriacou (NSU) posted a career-high five hits to aid the Spartans in an 8-2 win over Maryland Eastern Shore.

George Michael (DSU) earned the win against Coppin State after pitching 4.2 innings.

Matt McClain (DSU) pitched a 7-0 shutout, allowing five hits and striking out eight against Coppin State.

Kyle McGowin (SSU) tossed 9.0 innings to earn the win against North Carolina A&T.

Bennie Robinson (FAMU) was 2-for-5 with one double and 10 putouts against North Florida.

Zachary Saca (UMES) was 1-1 last week with a 0.00 ERA in 5.2 innings against Monmouth and Norfolk State.

Brandon Schott (UMES) batted .455 with five doubles and seven RBI in five games for the Hawks.
