MEAC Announces Baseball Weekly Honors

NORFOLK, Va., February 26, 2013- Savannah State senior Kevin Herlihy earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week honors in baseball, the conference announced on Wednesday.  Teammates Kyle McGowin was named the Pitcher of the Week, while Mendez Elder earned Rookie of the Week accolades.

Herlihy (1B, 6-0, Sr., 205, Virginia Beach,Va.) batted .385 with five hits in 13 appearances. He tallied two doubles, one triple and four RBI to aid the Tigers in a 3-0 sweep of Alabama A&M. In the second game of the series, he hit 3-for-5 from the plate (.600) and drove in one run.  Defensively, he totaled 23 putouts and one assist.

McGowin (P, 6-3, Jr., 175, Sag Harbor, N.Y.) allowed four hits and one walk to earn a 0.00 ERA in a 7-0 non-conference win over Alabama A&M. In 7.2 innings of action he allowed four hits and struck out 11 of 27 batters.

Elder (OF, 5-9, Fr., 175, Roswell, Ga.) hit .500 (5-for-10) with two RBI, one putout and one assist in three Tiger victories. In the last game of the series against Alabama A&M, he was perfect (2-for-2) from the plate.

Other Top Performers:

Alex Brown (CSU) was 3-for-5 (.600) with a double and an RBI in the Eagles 10-8 victory against Navy.

Ross Cardwell (NSU) batted .429 with three hits in seven appearances to aid the Spartans in a doubleheader split against Rider last week.

Jordan Elliott (DSU) pitched 5.0 innings to record a 0.00 ERA against Winthrop. Elliott did not allow a hit or a run and struck out seven of 19 batters.

Montana Durapau (B-CU) earned the 1-0 shutout with a 0.00 ERA, allowing three hits and  striking out four of 29 batters against Florida International.

Cameron Jergens (NCAT) led his team with a .467 average (7-for-15) with a double and two RBI in four games.

Jeffrey Fleetwood (UMES) was 2-for-5 with a double and a RBI in a 9-6 loss to Buffalo.

Zach Lee (NCCU) batted .429 for the Eagles (6-for-14) with an RBI, six putouts and eight assists in four games.

Brent Moore (NCAT) allowed one unearned run with nine hits and three runs in 7.0 innings of action for a 1.29 ERA against Marshall.

Aaron Nardone (DSU) hit .500 in four games for the Hornets with a double, one RBI and 12 assists.

Jordan Quinn (NCCU) earned the win with a 1.29 ERA in seven innings against Davidson.

Bennie Robinson (FAMU) tallied two hits in four appearances with 15 putouts and one assist against Maine.

Richie Salter (NSU) recorded a 0.00 ERA in 4.2 innings, allowing six hits and striking out four to capture the win against Rider.

Eric Sams (B-CU) batted .471 on eight hits in 17 appearances in five games for the Wildcats.

Will Turley (UMES) allowed three hits and one strikeout in 3.0 innings against VMI.
