Ore, Day Help Spartans Split Season-Opening Doubleheader with Navy
NORFOLK, Va. - Tyon Ore knocked in Cameron Day with the winning run on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning of Friday's nightcap, giving the Spartans a 7-6 win and a doubleheader split with Navy to open the 2013 season at Marty L. Miller Field.
Ore went 3-for-3 with a career-high four RBI in the second game. Day went 3-for-3 with a career-high four runs scored in the contest, capping off a 5-for-6 day.
Navy (1-1) rallied in both games, but unlike the opener - a 4-3 Midshipmen victory - the Spartans had the answer in game two. The Spartans broke a 2-all tie in game two by scoring twice in the third and twice in the fifth. In the third, Mikey Bruno scored on a wild pitch and Ross Cardwell knocked in another with an infield single. Ore had the big blow, a two-run double to deep center that gave the Spartans a 6-2 lead in the fifth.
Navy rallied though with three unearned runs off Spartan starter Chris Horne (six innings, one earned run) in the sixth after an NSU error and a misplayed double-play extended the inning. Robert Currie had the big hit in the frame, a two-run single.
The Midshipmen then tied it at 6-all in the seventh off NSU closer Ray Morton. Dave Milanes walked to lead off the inning, then pinch runner Dylan Wheeler scored on a deep double by Greg Dupell.
But NSU responded in the ninth. Day drew a lead-off walk from Navy reliever Johnny Schoberl (0-1), the seventh time Day reached base in eight plate appearances Friday. Zach Markel followed with a single, and a wild pitch moved both runners up a base. Ore then placed a single over Navy first baseman Kash Manzelli's head.
Morton got the win, pitching one inning and allowing a run. He pitched one inning in both games. Markel was 3-for-4 in the second game to go with Day and Ore's three hits apiece. Coupled with Cardwell's 2-for-2 game, those four players combined for 11 of the Spartans' 12 hits in the nightcap.
In game one, NSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to consecutive doubles by Chase Kyriacou and Day in the bottom of first off Navy starter Ben Nelson. The Midshipmen tied it up in the third as David Wiedeman walked and later scored on a wild pitch by Spartan starter Justin Bhatti.
Both teams scored in the fourth. Manzelli hit an RBI double for Navy, but Cody Ellis knocked in a run with a fielder's choice to tie it at 2-all in the bottom of the fourth.
Navy pulled ahead 4-2 with runs in the sixth and seventh. Currie hit an RBI single in the sixth, and Manzelli added another in the seventh.
Kyriacou was 3-for-4 with two runs in the opener. Day was 2-for-3 with an RBI. For Navy, Manzelli was 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Currie and Dupell had two hits apiece.
Nelson (1-0) got the win for Navy, allowing two runs (one earned) with six strikeouts in seven innings. Bhatti (0-1) took the loss, allowing three runs and five hits with five walks and six strikeouts in six innings.
