NCCU Earns First Ever Win Over Camels

BUIES CREEK, N.C.- Sophomore Tyson Simpson's first-ever five-hit contest along with five Eagles recording two RBI was exactly what North Carolina Central needed to earn its first-ever victory over Campbell on Thursday afternoon taking down the Camels 12-7 in front of a stunned Taylor Field crowd in Buies Creek, N.C.

In a ballgame that saw a combined eight batters hit-by-a-pitch, 10 walks, and 22 runners left on base, the Eagles took a 5-1 lead in the top of the second inning scoring four runs on two hits but left the bases loaded.  Junior Luis Diaz recorded RBI No. 28 on the year with an infield hit, as sophomore Troy Marrow helped plate an NCCU run as he was hit-by-a-pitch to give him 40 RBI on the year.

In 14 previous tries, NCCU had fallen short against Campbell, including a 20-0 Camel victory on April 11 in Durham along with a 15-2, 6-1 doubleheader sweep in early March.

Junior righty Glenn Frye picked up the victory for the Eagles in his home county by throwing two innings allowing only one run on one hit along with two strikeouts to give him 142 in his NCCU career.  Romano earned his first career save as an Eagle in his three inning performance where he surrendered two hits and no earned runs allowed.

Heath Bowers took the loss for Campbell as he pitched five innings giving up four runs on five hits with five strikeouts.

Simpson led NCCU going 5-for-6 on the day with two RBI.  Prior to today's offensive outburst the sophomore had never recorded more than three hits in a contest.  Simpson has recorded at least one hit in 11 of his last 14 ballgames and has seen his batting average rise to .286 on the year.

Bruno, Ore Notch 3 Hits Each in Spartan Win over CSU

HANOVER, Md. - Mikey Bruno and Tyon Ore both went 3-for-5 to support a solid start from right hander Justin Bhatti to lift Norfolk State to a 12-2 win over MEAC North foe Coppin State on Thursday evening at Joe Cannon Stadium.

With the win, NSU improved to 18-26 overall, 12-9 in the MEAC Northern Division. The Eagles dropped to 1-48, 0-21. The game, a rescheduled contest from a March 26 rainout, was stopped after eight innings due to the 10-run rule.

Bhatti (4-6) pitched five solid innings, allowing just one unearned run with six strikeouts. It was his third straight start allowing two earned runs or fewer. Bhatti had plenty of help from his offense, which tallied 14 hits. Eight of the nine Spartans' starting position players had at least one hit.

Bhatti allowed four hits and one unearned run in five innings. He walked three and struck out six. Jeff Di Fulgo pitched two innings allowing one run, and Horace Smith pitched a scoreless eighth.
