Hawks Score Five In The Ninth Against Coppin State

 

UMES got the bats hot when it needed them, using a five-run ninth inning to come back against Coppin State and win 7-6 at Hawks Stadium.  It is the first walk-off victory of the year for the UMES, which improved to 6-23 overall and 5-5 in conference play, while the Eagles fall to 0-27 and 0-6 in the MEAC.

This is the first win for UMES when the Hawks were down after eight innings.  It is also the fifth straight conference win for the Maroon and Grey.

The game began with a pitcher's duel, with UMES's Tyler Witte and Coppin State's Madison Neddo keeping their respective opponents scoreless through the first three innings.

James Newsome finished the day with three hits in five at bats for UMES, including a double, a run scored and the game-tying RBI.  Jeffrey Fleetwood had a multi-RBI outing for the fourth time in five games, finishing with three runs brought home on a 1-for-4 day.  Wylie went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Aaron Jones led Coppin State going 2-for-5, bringing in two runs.  Mike Wright and Jordan Walls went 2-for-4 with a run scored, with the former getting an RBI.

UMES and Coppin State will play in a doubleheader tomorrow at Hawks Stadium beginning at noon.
