MEAC ANNOUNCES BASEBALL WEEKLY HONORS

NORFOLK, Va., April 2, 2012- North Carolina Central junior Luis Diaz earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week honors in baseball, the conference announced on Monday. Maryland Eastern Shore's Tyler Witte was named the Pitcher of the Week, while Deion Doubledee of North Carolina Central earned Rookie of the Week accolades.

Diaz (OF, 5-8, Jr., 195, Geneva, N.Y.) batted .556 with 10 hits in 18 appearances to guide the Eagles to a 4-1 mark last week. He recorded one homerun, three triples, one double, nine runs, and five RBI. Diaz was 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI in a 9-5 win over Florida A&M.  For the week he added 21 putouts defensively.

Witte (P, 6-3, So., 160, Milford, Del.) pitched a complete game allowing one hit to earn a 0.00 ERA in an 18-1 conference win against Coppin State. The sophomore struck out nine of 29 batters, allowed three walks and no runs in seven innings of action.

Doubledee (1B, 6-1, Fr., 200, Wilson, N.C.) batted .364 (4-of-11) with one double and two runs, and two RBI to aid the Eagles to four wins and a sweep of Florida A&M. The rookie added nine putouts in a defensive effort.

Jamal Clark (NCAT) tallied a 0.00 ERA with two unearned runs and a save in relief for the Aggies.

Jordan Elliott (DSU) allowed four hits in 7.0 innings in a 13-0 win against Maryland Eastern Shore.

Jeffrey Fleetwood (UMES) batted .375 with one triple, five runs and seven RBI in four Hawk games.

Kelvin Freeman (NCAT) hit .555 with two doubles and three runs in five games for the Aggies.

Sam Fulmer (NCCU) threw his first complete game of the year with a 0.00 ERA and seven hits in an 18-3 win over Florida A&M.

Tony Gatto (DSU) batted .467 (7-of-15) with one double and five RBI to aid the Hornets to a 3-2 mark last week.

Reginald Grant (FAMU) was 9-of-18 (.500) with two RBI and three runs in five games for the Rattlers.

Gabriel Hernandez (B-CU) earned a 0.00 ERA with two hits in three innings of relief in a 5-2 win over North Florida.

Joshua James (UMES) was 2-of-3 (.667) with two runs and an RBI in an 18-1 win over Coppin State.

David Lee (B-CU) hit .571 with one homerun, one triple, two RBI, and four runs in two games for the Wildcats.

Estarlin Paulino (NCAT) earned a 2.00 ERA and struck out five with one walk in a 5-2 win over Savannah State.
