Spartans Complete Doubleheader and Series Sweep of Coppin State
NORFOLK, Va. - Mikey Bruno went 4-for-8 and Norfolk State pitchers Ryan VanAssche and Chris Horne turned in two solid starts to lead the Spartans to a 9-1, 8-6 doubleheader sweep of visiting Coppin State on Saturday afternoon at Dick Price Stadium.
The Spartans (14-21, 10-7) recorded 10 hits in each ballgame and have notched at least 10 in five straight contests following the three-game conference sweep of the Eagles (0-38, 0-14).
In game 1, VanAssche (3-4) allowed just four hits and one run in seven innings while striking out a career-high nine hitters. Bruno and Cameron Day both went 2-for-4 in the opener, with Day matching his career high with three RBI.
Colon also tallied two hits, and Tyon Ore scored twice in the opener for NSU.
Aaron Jones had two of CSU's five hits in game 1. Ben Jarboe (0-11) took the loss for the Eagles, allowing nine hits and seven runs (four earned) in 6.2 innings pitched.
CSU took a 2-0 lead in game 2 on Ian Arciaga's two-run double off Horne in the top of the second inning. But those would be the only runs to cross home plate against Horne (4-4), who picked up his team-leading fourth win of the season.
NSU tied the game in the bottom of the third. Warren led off with a triple and scored on an RBI single by Justin Lee. Lee later scored on a sacrifice fly by Shane Hoggard.
The Spartans took the lead for good on a two-out, two-run single by Chase Kyriacou in the bottom of the fourth. They would add some insurance with a four-run sixth with included three extra-base hits. Montgomery tripled to score Colon, who had been hit by a pitch. Warren's sacrifice fly then plated Montgomery, making it 6-2 in NSU's favor.
Later in the frame, Lee reached base on a bunt single and scored when Bruno sliced a double just inside the third-base bag. Bruno scored on Cardwell's two-out triple, NSU's third triple of the game.
NSU would need those runs as the Eagles scored four of their own in the top of the seventh. An NSU error prolonged the inning, and with two outs, Jesse Savage hit an RBI single and Alex Brown hit a three-run double to bring CSU within 8-6. But Jordan Egan got Arciaga to ground out to end the game.
Horne allowed just five hits and two runs in six innings. He walked three and struck out six. NSU's pitchers struck out 20 in the doubleheader and fanned 39 in 25 innings in the three-game series.
Hawks (0-7) took the loss after giving up four runs and six hits in four innings. Arciaga and Jordan Ellis had two hits apiece in the nightcap for CSU.

Nccu Earns Twinbill Split With Bethune-Cookman
DURHAM, N.C.- North Carolina Central earned a split with Bethune-Cookman dropping a heartbreaker in game one 5-4, and taking game two 4-3 in extra innings in Saturday afternoon's conference doubleheader presented by Spoken-4 Communications at the Durham Athletic Park.
The first game of the day pitted both team's top pitcher with NCCU's Sam Fulmer battling B-CU's Rayan Gonzalez and it lived up to the billing.
In the bottom of the first inning Dylan Drayton ripped a single up the middle on the first pitch of the frame. Sophomore Tyson Simpson and junior Luis Diaz both singled to load the bases with no outs. Following a Troy Marrow strikeout, Carter Williamson plated the first run of the day reaching on a fielder's choice as Drayton scored from third to give the Eagles an early 1-0 advantage.
Fulmer was at his best allowing only one hit through the first four innings, including four strikeouts to keep the Wildcats scoreless.
In the fifth and sixth inning Fulmer continued to cruise, in by far one of his best performances as an Eagle, but the Wildcats broke the seal in the top of the seventh inning when Jairo Acevedo and Jordan Taylor began the inning with back-to-back singles. Acevedo scored on a fielder's choice to plate B-CU's first run of the day and cut the deficit to 4-1. Moments later with two outs and Juan Piazzaro still at first, Fulmer picked him off to end the frame and give the Eagles more momentum holding onto a three-run lead.
After a scoreless eighth inning, B-CU woke up in the ninth as Alejandro Sanchez led off the frame with an infield hit, which ended the day for Fulmer.
Junior Gavin Guarrera came on in-relief and plunked the first batter and allowed a single by Taylor to load the bases with no outs.
Pizarro hit into a 1-2-3 double play which placed two outs on the board and put runners on second and third for B-CU, when Josh Johnson hit what seemed to be the final out with a grounder over to Simpson, but the sophomore's throw was beaten by Johnson as he dove in safely at first, scoring Acevedo and making it 4-2 in favor of NCCU.
Centerfielder Brandon Turner drilled a full count pitch to left center field driving in three runs including Johnson all the way from first to complete the comeback and give B-CU the 5-4 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth behind two great Acevedo defensive plays, NCCU could not muster up the offense to tie the contest thus dropping game one 5-4.
Scott Garner threw two innings and earned the win for the Wildcats to even his record at 3-3 on the year.
For NCCU, Drayton finished the first game 2-for-4 with two runs scored, as Williamson also went 2-for-4 with two RBI giving him 33 on the year.
NCCU jumped out in front once again on B-CU after Simpson reached base on a one-out walk, and Diaz punched his eighth double of the year down the left field line to put runners at second and third. Simpson would later score on Marrow's sacrifice fly to right field to give him 30 RBI on the year and the Eagles led 1-0.
Three straight hits for the Wildcats in the top of the second inning allowed B-CU to knot the game up at one but left two runners stranded in the frame.
In the bottom of the fourth inning it was Drayton's two out single to left field that drove in the both of the Eagle runs and put NCCU up 3-1.
B-CU immediately answered in the top of the fifth with a David Lee double down the line in left field scoring catcher Lenny Martinez and Turner tying the game at 3-3.
The Eagle bats were silenced in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings as was the case for the Wildcats as B-CU left three runners on base in the final two frames to send the second contest of the day into extra innings.
Sophomore Jacob Russell came on in relief in the sixth and pitched brilliantly for NCCU that included a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the eighth.
Russell (2-6) earned the win with his three innings in-relief where allowed one hit with two strikeouts. Dailey (5-5) took the loss for the Wildcats. Despite earning a no-decision Romano threw five innings surrendered eight hits and allowed only three runs with two strikeouts a performance for the ages considering he was thrown into action at the last minute.
Williamson led the Eagles in the twinbill sponsored by Spoken-4 Communications as he went 4-for-8 (.500) on the afternoon with a double and three RBI, while Drayton and Diaz were both 3-for-8 (.375) at-the-plate as Drayton scored two runs and drove in two RBI, while Diaz had a double and an RBI to his credit on the day.

North Carolina A&T Falls to Longwood
FARMVILLE, Va.-Saturday's baseball games at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium featured two walk-off moments for Longwood as it swept a doubleheader from North Carolina A&T. The Lancers took the first game 4-3 in 11 innings, and then repeated the feat in Game 2 by winning 4-3 in their last at-bat in the seventh.
The Aggies (13-26) went down to the wire for the third straight game this week. They will look to get over the hump on Sunday as they host the Lancers (21-17) for a twin bill starting at 1 p.m.
The Aggies nearly won Game 2, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to take a 3-2 lead.
A&T slugger Marquis Riley tied the game at 2 with an RBI single to right field, scoring senior Carvell Copeland. Luke Tendler then hit it into what looked like a double play. Longwood put out Riley at second. But when Longwood shortstop Matt Dickason threw the ball to first base, no one was covering. The ball sailed to the fence, allowing Tendler to advance to second.
Mark Nales then stepped up to the plate and slammed an RBI double to the left-center field wall to give A&T the lead.
Longwood responded in its half of the seventh. Reliever Dylan Hipp walked the leadoff batter Robby Newman. Delk then doubled to center field, which brought home Newman to tie the game t 3. The Aggies then called on right-hander Andrew Cook to keep order. He got Joey Varaksa to go down swinging, before intentionally walking Alex Owens to put two on with one out for Travis Biddix.
Cook walked Biddix to load the bases, and put the go-ahead run at third. The walk proved costly. Designated hitter Conner Hall hit a sacrifice fly to right to score the game-winning run and end the game.
The good fight began in Game 1. With the Aggies trailing 3-2 in the eighth inning, Riley earned a one-out walk, and stole second as Tendler struck out swinging. First baseman Kelvin Freeman extended his hitting streak to 10 games by singling up the middle off the glove of pitcher Aaron Myers to bring home Riley, making it a 3-3 contest. Little grounded out to third with the go-ahead run on first to end the rally.
The Aggies ran into trouble in the bottom of the ninth. Nine-hole hitter Zach Jordan reached first and took second on a throwing error by Radford. He took third on a sac bunt by Matt Dickason. A&T starter Estarlin Paulino, who allowed three runs on nine hits in 9.0 innings, then intentionally walked Burkett. With runners at the corners and one out, Lacy hit into a 6-4-3 double play to push the game into extra innings.
The Lancers once again threatened and got the winning run within 90 feet for the second straight inning as Newman tripled to right field. But right-hand reliever Joe Mackey got the Aggies to the 11th inning.
After the triple, Mackey intentionally walked the next two batters to load the bases with no out to enable the force at any base. Mackey then got the next two batters to pop out before Bobby Shelton struck out looking to end the threat.
A&T again had its chance to take the lead over the Lancers in the 11th as an error and a walk allowed Tendler and Little to reach base. With two on and one out, freshman Bo McMillan grounded out to second. Both runners advanced into scoring position on the play. Stefan Jordan then struck out to end the A&T offensive.
In their half of the 11th, the Lancers got the winning run on second base as Bruce Burkett doubled to left-center with one out. Justin Lacy then hit a walk-off RBI single down the right field line to give Longwood the victory. It was the third time the Aggies have lost in extra innings this season.
The Aggies had 17 hits on the day, including two by Luke Tendler to extend his hitting streak to 12 games, and they left a combined 15 runners stranded. The Aggies also had four double plays on the day, using strong defense to help limit the Lancers.
