CSU's Savage Records Career High Four Hits

NORFOLK, Va. - Jesse Savage had a career-high four hits, but Cameron Day and Ross Cardwell each had two runs batted in to lead Norfolk State to a 12-5 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over Coppin State on Friday at Marty Miller Field.

Norfolk State (12-21, 8-7 MEAC) broke open a close game by scoring five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Savage finished the game 4-for-5 with two runs batted in and a run scored. His previous career high was three hits, which he accomplished two times.

Coppin State (0-36, 0-12 MEAC) also received two RBI from Ian Arciaga and two hits from Aaron Jones.

Justin Bhatti improved to 3-4 on the season by going 6.0 innings and allowing four runs, while Madison Neddo absorbed the loss by allowing six earned runs in 7.0 innings.

Norfolk State took a 4-0 lead after two innings, but Coppin State rallied to tie the game.

The Eagles loaded the bases in the third inning when Mike Wright walked, Dawan Smith singled and John Walls was hit by a pitch.

Savage produced the Eagles first run when he singled in Wright cutting the lead to 4-1.

Smith came in to score on a wild pitch cutting the lead to 4-2 and the Eagles loaded the bases again when Alex Brown walked.

Arciaga then followed with a single to center that brought home Walls and Savage and tied the score at 4-4.

The Spartans then regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Day triple and a sacrifice fly from Chris Warren.

A Coppin State throwing error allowed the Spartans to push the lead to 7-4 in the sixth inning.

Norfolk State broke the game open by scoring five times in the bottom of the eighth inning highlighted by Cardwell's two-run single.

The Eagles added a run in the top of the ninth inning when an infield single by Savage scored Wright.

Hornets Take Two From Hawks, 12-0 & 3-2 

Dover, Del. (Apr. 20, 2012) --- Jordan Elliott tossed a six-hit shutout to lead Delaware State to a 12-0 win over UMES in game one of a MEAC North doubleheader at Soldier Field today.

The Hornets completed the doubleheader sweep with a 3-2 victory in the seven-inning nightcap. Troy Drummond singled home DJ Miller with the winning run with two out in the last of the seventh inning. 

The Hornets have won their last six games to improve to 24-14-1 overall, they lead the MEAC North with a 13-1 mark in division games. UMES is 9-30 and 8-9.

DSU is 10 games over the .500 mark for the first time since posting a 40-19 record in 2002.

Elliott threw his fourth career shutout against UMES. He has not given up a run in 34 career innings against the Hawks. He allowed six hits, while striking out five to improve to 7-2 this season. The former Milford (Del.) High School star lowered his earned run average to 2.19 this year.

Ryan Haas knocked in three runs, while Cameron Cecil and Tony Gatto drove in two each in the opener.

The Hornets scored first with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. The rally began when Peter Broehl drew a walk with two outs and the bases empty. Drummond and Scott Davis followed with singles to load the bases. The next batter, Cameron Cecil, singled to right to score Broehl and Drummond with the first runs of the game.

Delaware State scored five runs in the fifth to open up a 7-0 lead. Haas singled in the first two runs of the inning. Gatto, Broehl and JP Frey also delivered run-scoring hits in the fifth.

The Hornets put five more runs on the board in the sixth. Haas singled in his third run of the game and Gatto was credited with a RBI when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the inning. DSU also scored three runs on UMES errors in the sixth.

The game was called after UMES batted in the seventh due to the 10-run rule.

Haas (2-for-4), Cecil (2-4) and Drummond (2-5) had two hits each for DSU in the opener.

In the nightcap, the score was 2-2 when Gatto doubled with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. Miller then entered the game as a pinch runner for Gatto. Two batters later, Drummond singled to right center on a 1-1 pitch to score Miller with the game-winning run.

Matt McClain pitched a complete game for the Hornets in the nightcap. He allowed seven hits and two unearned runs to improve to 6-3 on the season. He lowered his ERA to 2.52 this season.

Game two was scoreless until the Hornets scored twice on the fourth inning. Frey singled in the first run of the game and Eddie Sorondo scored the second run on a UMES error.

The Hawks tied the game with two unearned runs in the top of the sixth.
