Coppin State Falls to Lehigh, 4-2

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Zach Spahn went 2-for-4 with a run batted in and Paul Hawk pitched seven strong innings, but Lehigh used a three-run first inning to post a 4-2 non-conference victory over Coppin State on Tuesday at Goodman Campus.

Lehigh (15-26-1) scored three times in the first inning and then added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning to hold off the Eagles.

Spahn and Alex Brown delivered RBI for the Eagles, while Hawk went 7.0 innings and allowed six hits and four runs to go along with five strikeouts.

Coppin State (0-35) took an early lead by scoring in the top of the first inning.

Zach Hawk singled and stole second and scored when Spahn produced a two-out single giving CSU a 1-0 lead.

Lehigh answered by scoring three times in the bottom of the first inning as the Mountain Hawks scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded, an RBI single from Casey Turner and a fielder's choice RBI from Connor Faust.

Paul Hawk then blanked Lehigh over the next five innings as he allowed just one infield single and retired seven straight batters from the fourth through the sixth innings.

The Eagles drew within 3-2 with a run in the top of the sixth inning.

Jesse Savage was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to third when Spahn singled up the middle.

Brown followed with an RBI single to center cutting the lead to 3-2, but the Eagles squandered an opportunity to tie the game.

Spahn advanced to third on a passed ball, but was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a pitch that eluded the catcher when Aaron Jones walked.

Brown advanced to third and Jones moved up to second on the play at the plate, but Lehigh reliever Rene Tato got a line out and a strikeout to end the CSU threat.

The Mountain Hawks added a run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Ryan Gajdos doubled in Lance Kirschenbaum to extend the lead to 4-2.

Norfolk State Falls to Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion used a six-run second inning and a four-run third to jump to a big early lead, then had to hold off a furious late Norfolk State rally to subdue the Spartans, 11-8, on Tuesday night before 3,651 fans at Harbor Park.

The win helped the Monarchs (14-23) clinch a season split of the two games with NSU (11-21).

Trailing 11-3, NSU made it even more interesting with a five-run eighth. Cameron Day got the scoring started with an RBI single to center, and Mikey Bruno followed with a sacrifice fly. With two outs, Ryan Montgomery kept the rally going with a two-run single to right field off Mike Ney, the second of three ODU pitchers to see time in the eighth. Montgomery advanced to third on Ross Cardwell's third single of the game and scored on a passed ball to cut the Spartans' deficit to 11-8.

But Erick Baker retired Shane Hoggard to end the uprising in the eighth, and worked a 1-2-3 ninth to earn the save.

Greg Tomchick (1-2) got the win in ODU's pre-determined staff outing. He allowed three hits and one run in three innings. Di Fulgo (0-6) was saddled with the loss after giving up eight hits and eight runs, seven earned, in three-plus innings.

Cardwell was 3-for-5 and extended his hitting streak to seven games for the Spartans. Day and Bruno added two hits apiece as NSU out-hit the Monarchs 13-10.

Eldridge was 3-for-6 with three RBI, while Frazier went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI to pace ODU.

UMES DEFEATED BY NAVY 10-0

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The Hawks were shut out by Navy 10-0 on Tuesday to wrap up its nine-game homestand.  UMES falls to 9-28 on the season while the Midshipmen go to 16-22.

In the bottom of the first, Byron Campbell singled off Navy starter Dallas Redden (1-0) to reach base for the 30th-straight game.

After James Smith (0-4) went through the top of the first unscathed, the Mids broke out in the next inning.  With second and third and one out, Josh Moore singled up the middle to bring in Kash Manzelli, followed by a Greg Bryant fielder's choice to short to score Chris Campbell for a 2-0 Navy lead.

A pair more came across the plate for Navy in the third off a two-run single by Manzelli, scoring Andrew Hahn and Greg Dupell to put the visitors up by four.  The Mids scored two more in the top of the fourth off a pair of consecutive RBI triples from Hahn and Dupell to put Navy up 6-0.

UMES threatened in the bottom half of the fourth with a Stephen Bull walk and Campbell single to put first and second with nobody out, but Redden forced a double play and ground out to end the inning.

Navy used more two-run singles, a Dupell one in the sixth and a Bryant single in the seventh, to build a 10-0 lead.

The bullpen duo of Sean Woods and Bernard Parker pitched the final two innings without a run allowed, but it was not enough as the Hawks fell 10-0.

The loss went to Smith, allowing four runs in two-and-a-third with a strikeout.  Zachary Saca, Woods and Parker combined for 2.1 innings thrown without a run charged.

Redden got the win, throwing 5.1 innings in his start with two strikeouts.  Charlie LaMar picked up the save after throwing the final three and two-thirds, earning a pair of strikeouts.

Wildcats Fall to South Florida in Ninth-Inning Thriller

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - USF pinch hitter Buddy Putnam put the final notch on the board in the ninth, beating out a 3-2 count with a single up the middle to bat in the final run of the night, giving the Bulls the 4-3 lead over Bethune-Cookman in the teams' fourth and final meeting of the season, Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

USF (26-12) built an early lead on the Wildcats (23-15), scoring on a pair of RBI singles for right fielder James Ramsay in the first and third, but the Wildcats evened the score with one stroke, as David Lee's 2-2 count, two-run hit sailed over the left field wall.

The next two innings kept the scoreboard at a standstill, until a triple down the right field line to set the table for a USF sacrifice fly in the sixth to go up 3-2.

Facing crunch-time in the eighth, the Wildcats' Lee walked to lead off, and worked his way into scoring position, coming in for the second tie run on a wild pitch.

In the ninth, Ramsay put the ball in play and worked into scoring position. With two outs on the board, Putnam stepped in as the hitter splitting the middle infield into center for the RBI single and a one-run lead.

Ramsay played a significant role in the win for USF, batting in two of the Bulls' four runs, and scoring the winning run, amidst a 3-5 performance.

Lee's home run accounted for his 1-2, two RBI performance, while the Wildcats collected nine hits and had four batters go 2-4 against USF.
