HAWKS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER WITH DELAWARE STATE FOR FIRST MEAC WIN
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - After losing the first game to Delaware State in the doubleheader opener, Jacob Foreman led the Hawks to a second game victory for the first conference win for UMES. The Hawks go to 2-21 overall and 1-5 in the MEAC, while Delaware State goes to 14-10-1 and 5-1 in conference play.
In game one, DSU used an RBI single and double from Cameron Cecil and Ryan Haas respectively off UMES starter Jesus Hernandez (0-3) for a two-run lead.
Hernandez pitched a scoreless second and third inning, but the Hornets scored two more in the fourth for a 4-0 lead.
UMES tried to rally to avoid the mercy rule. Stephen Bull led off with a walk, with Byron Campbell reaching first off a fielder's choice. James Newsome singled followed by Brandon Schott singling and scoring Campbell to being the Hawks within 10, but they could not get another run and fell via the mercy rule 13-3 after seven innings.
McClain won the game with 4.2 innings thrown, allowing two runs. Tommy Dill finished the game for DSU with two-and-a-third, allowing a run that was unearned.
Hernandez got the loss, allowing eight runs, just six earned, in five innings. Michael Epps did not have a run charged against him in an inning pitched.
The Hawks took the lead first in the second game in the first frame. Bull walked, followed by Campbell reaching on an error by the third baseman Nick Arrue. As Campbell stole second, Bull scored on a throwing error by the catcher Cameron Cecil to give UMES its first run. Newsome reached on an infield single to second, and a subsequent error on the play allowed Campbell to score, giving UMES a 2-0 lead.
Delaware State got the bats going in the second, using two hits, three walks and a pair of hit batters to combine for four runs, taking a 4-2 lead after the inning.
In the third, Newsome rocketed a pitch to left field off DSU starter Matt McClain (2-3) for his first home run of the year, a solo shot with one out, to cut the deficit to one 4-3.
Next inning the Hawks took back the lead. Johnson led off with an infield single, advancing to second on a Fleetwood ground out and later off a wild pitch. With two outs, Bagwell reached on a fielding error by Arrue at third, allowing Johnson to score and Bagwell to go to third on a subsequent error by left fielder Nardone to tie the game. Next pitch, Bull singled through the hole on the left side to score Bagwell and give UMES a 5-4 lead.
From there, UMES starter Foreman (1-4) took control, allowing just one hit past the second inning and finishing the game for UMES, earning the 5-4 victory for the Hawks. Foreman pitched a complete game, allowing four runs, just three earned, with three hits allowed and four strikeouts. Other than the second inning, Foreman allowed just one hit and one walk, throwing four 1-2-3 innings in the game.
Adkins got the loss for DSU in game two, allowing five runs, with two earned, in four innings with four strikeouts. Elliott Gardner pitched two innings for the Hornets, not allowing a run and striking out two.
Newsome finished the day going 3-for-5 with a home run and a walk. Campbell and Johnson each got three hits and scored twice.
For DSU, Gatto combined to hit 4-for-7 with four RBI in the doubleheader, while Nardone scored four times in a 3-for-7 effort.

Rattlers Split A Doubleheader With Jackson State
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 24) - Florida A&M split a doubleheader with Southwestern Athletic Conference member Jackson State as the Rattlers pulled a 5-4 win in game one and the Tigers won game two as they held off a Rattler late inning rally, Saturday afternoon at Moore-Kittles Field .
FAMU finished game on with 10 hits, while JSU tallied six.
The Rattlers were led by John Scott, Schott Sheplak and Daniel Lee as they all finished with two hits each to lead FAMU, while both Desmond Russell and Charles Epperson finished with two hits apiece to lead the Tigers from the plate.
Stephen Dollar (1-0) picked up the win for the Rattlers as he pitched one inning of relief, allowing two hits, earned run and striking out one, while John Roberts started the game for FAMU as he gave up four hit, two earned runs and striking out six in seven innings on the mound. In addition, Tony Covington picked up his first save of the season as he pitched 1.0 inning, striking out two.
FAMU took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Sheplak scored on a Lee tripled to left center.
JSU (15-7) regained the lead in the top of the third inning as Glen Walker tripled to left center scoring both Stephen Curtis and Jose Cruz. Then Walker would score as Frank Solis grounds out to the first baseman, giving the Tigers a 3-1 lead.
The Rattlers would then win the game in the bottom of the eighth as they scored three runs as Lee scored on a balk. Then Justin Abney would double to left center scoring Franklin, followed by a Reginald Grant bases loaded walk scoring Tyler Lawson, giving FAMU the 5-4 win.
In game two, FAMU pounded out 11 hits, while JSU finished with 13.
Grant led the Rattlers from the plate as he tallied three hits in five at-bats with one RBI, while both Louis Torres and Aneko Knowles finished with three hits to lead the Tigers.
Quintavious Drains (4-3) picked up the win for JSU as he pitched one and one-third inning of relief giving up two hits and striking out three in the eight batters he faced, while Miles Williams received the loss for FAMU as he pitched one and one-third inning of relief, giving up one hit and striking out one in the six batters he faced.
