The Hawks were hit hard and often against Delaware State as the Hornets defeated UMES 13-0 in seven innings with a shutout from Jordan Elliott (3-2). UMES falls to 0-4 in conference play and 1-20 overall while DSU goes to 4-0 in the MEAC and a 13-9-1 overall standing.
The Hornets got five runs in the first inning, getting hits in six of the team's first seven at bats, to take a 5-0 lead.
Tyler Witte (0-5) pitched a scoreless second, but Delaware State scored in each of the next five innings, with one in the third, two in the fourth, a run in the fifth, three in the sixth and one more in the seventh, to build a 13-0 advantage.
The Hawks did not score in the seventh, forcing an early end to the game via the mercy rule.
UMES made good contact against Elliott, but the Hornets starter was too strong and pitched all seven innings without allowing a run, striking out four. The loss went to starter Witte, allowing eight runs, just six earned, in 3.1 innings.
Shaquille Bagwell increased his hit streak to five games with a single in the sixth for UMES. In his first pitching appearance as a Hawk, Dylan Bell did not have a run charged in an inning thrown.
Ryan Haas led the Hornets, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs driven in. JP Frey also had three RBI with his 2-for-3 day.
